“You know, the whole lucky color or unlucky color has never made sense to me,” Will said as he popped a baby carrot into his mouth. He’d said it randomly to whoever happened to be standing next to him at the Chinese New Year party. He hadn’t been there very long and so far he was standing in front of a sign showing the lucky colors (yellow, grey and brown) and the unlucky colors (blue and green).
“Do you believe in lucky and unlucky colors?” He turned fully facing Emilia Spinnet.
Tilting her head to the side, she considered the question. “Not really,” she answered in between sips of a Pomegranate Cosmo. It seemed silly to attach luck - good or bad - to certain colors, even if there were some colors she liked better than others.
“What’s your Chinese Zodiac?” Will asked mildly curious and partly because that seemed to be the kind of thing someone asked as this kind of thing.
“Er, Rooster, I guess.” Emilia laughed softly and shrugged. She had looked it up once but didn’t really know a lot about it. “What’s yours?”
“I have no idea,” Will answered with a shrug. “Let me look.” He moved to the side where there was a little screen you could search. “According to this a dragon, and I shouldn’t wear white.” He looked down at the white button-down shirt he had on well. “That explains all the bad luck in my life, can white be considered a bright color? Am I supposed to have Chromophobia?” He wasn’t being serious and the mock look on his face gave it away.
Emilia kind of assumed he was joking and she laughed softly as she shook her head. “Is that really a real thing?” she asked, half-joking herself. She knew some people had some pretty strange fears and she didn’t really tend to judge too much, but it did seem like kind of a weird thing to be afraid of.
“I think you look great in white,” she admitted, “but I could charm it a different color and see if your luck changes!” There was a little bit of a teasing sparkle in her eye at the suggestion.
“There is a phobia for everything,” Will confirmed. “Ranidaphobia - fear of frogs, Nipponophobia - fear of the Japanese, Selachophobia - fear of sharks, Coulrophobia - fear of clowns, pogonophobia - fear of beards, Chionophobia - Fear of snow, Genuphobia - Fear of knees, come to think of it, there is also Leukophobia - fear of the color white. That’d be more fitting in this case.”
Will looked over at her with a raised eyebrow and smirked. “Thanks,” he said thinking about it for a moment. “But I think I’ll take my chances with the white.”
“Fear of knees?” That one made her laugh. “Is that like a fear of having knees or of other people’s knees?” she wondered out loud. That one sounded even stranger than being afraid of a certain color.
Shrugging he sighed. “It can be, fear of having them, fear of someone else’s, it depends on the person, but usually it’s generally all knees, knees on people, knees on animals, pictures of knees…” Will trailed off. “There are fears of everything.”
“And what about you?” Emilia asked. “Do you have any phobias?” It was probably kind of a personal question, but she was really curious, especially considering that he obviously knew so much about them.
Will thought for a moment as he tried to figure out if he had any real phobias. “Nothing that I can’t live with, you?” He turned to look over at her.
Emilia thought about it for a moment and shook her head. “Not really, I don’t think.” She wasn’t totally fearless, but she didn’t think she had any real phobias. “So, you believe in all this zodiac stuff?” It was fun, but she wasn’t sure how much she believed in it. The description she’d read on the rooster didn’t real suit her very well.
Will laughed. “Ha! No, it’s interesting for a hangover on Saturday morning to read, but I don’t believe it. Magnus would tell me it has some blah blah blah merit, but for regular people, nah.” He was sure somewhere there was something made sense. “Are you a daily horoscope thing?”
“Me? No!” Emilia laughed at that. “I don’t think this Rooster even fits me!” She’d never been that into it - even divination she’d always sort of regarded as a silly subject without much real merit to it. “I know some people are really into it, but it seems awfully silly to me.”
“You're from the Hogwarts world, so you weren’t into Divinations?” He asked as he scrunched up his nose. “It always seemed like an interesting study, but not one that would be…” he tilted his head. “Well, hard science, or magic.”
Laughing softly, Emilia shook her head. “There are people in my world who are real seers, I guess,” she admitted, “but I’ve never been that into the subject. I don’t know if that’s because our teach was pretty out there or just that it’s a weird subject. Most of her predictions in class were just...” she shrugged. Out of all the lessons she’d had at Hogwarts, Divination seemed the least useful.
“Doom and gloom,” Will finished. “I read the books,” he admitted. “Come on Rooster, let me buy you a drink,” he said nodding towards one of the bars.
Emilia nodded with a grin on her face. “You got it, Dragon” she agreed easily.
