HOPE WICKER + ROSE WARD
PG-13 (language) | COMPLETE
It was the first time Hope had been in one of the mini-subs, in her own future she’d helped improve them. But it was a first for her to follow after a dinosaur in one, and her nerves were a little wracked. When Rose had made the call over to her, she didn’t hesitate to hop in, but now she’d admit there was a barely noticeable tremble to her fingers as they descended into the water.
“So, are we just going to chase it into the anomaly? Swimming out there in a scuba suit probably isn’t the best plan, right?” Hope’s hands, firmly on the controls, paused as she looked over at her companion. “Tell me scuba suits aren’t the plan.”
Rose’s experience with subs weren’t her favorite memories, but at least this was a mini one and appeared to be better built than some others she’d seen back home.
Smirking she glanced over at Hope before looking forward tracking the Pilosaurs. “I’m not really in the mood to tempt being eaten by that thing,” she had no plans to actually swim with it. “But I’m hoping we can herd it, or chase it, back into its own time and avoid having to go through it ourselves. Matt’s not too keen on people going through the anomalies.”
“Yeah, I don’t blame him.” Hope grinned a little in response and looked back out the sub window so she could murmur quietly. “My, what big teeth you have…” There was a drop in depth with a sudden jerk, forcing them to compensate, but the radar still showed-- oh, there it was. Shit.
“Hang on, there’s something-” She cut off as the sub jerked again, and Hope tried to look out the side window through the water. “Fuck. I think we’re stuck on something? Can you see anything?”
Rose was chuckling when they dropped suddenly, it didn’t make sense, from what she could tell they hadn’t gone through the anomaly. She remained calm, as she pushed a fallen piece of hair back from her face. She unbuckled herself and got up to look around out the windows.
“How are the lights, can we still point them?” She asked turning to look at Hope as she pointed towards where she needed to see.
“Front lights only,” The back ones were blocked out by something, Hope went to the controls to flick a few things, red lights appearing on the screen in front of her. “We’re definitely stuck, I can’t tell by what on the radar, just looks like … nothing. The anomaly is still here,” Hope pointed on the radar screen ahead of them.
She chewed on her lower lip for a second. “Magic is too big of a risk.”
Rose frowned when she heard about the lights. “Can you turn off the cabin lights and leave the front ones on?” She might be able to see something in that case but she wasn’t holding her breath either. The idea of being stuck down there wasn’t something she was comfortable with.
Magic was still new to Rose in some ways, especially all the different kinds of magic. “Magic is your call.” She said with confidence, her voice supportive.
Hope reached over and flipped a switch, turning off the cabin lights and making it dark - but the blue glow from the outside crept in, giving them just a faint glow, and the waters in front of them were brought to life in an illuminated flood. “If I have to risk it, I will, but-” Well, that call would come if they started running out of oxygen, which they currently had plenty of, or shit went sideways.
“See anything? I think the rear propeller is stuck on something, but it’s not grinding.” Hope wrinkled her nose. “If we’re being held in place by a dinosaur with thumbs…”
Rose snorted. “Given everything we’ve seen here, I wouldn’t be surprised.” She responded as she tried to make out the dark shape. “It doesn’t look like solid, or rock like.” She narrowed her eyes and swore she saw something move, second guessing it she figured it was probably a first. “If it is something holding us, I think we have to stay put for the time being and see if we can contact the surface, after that, test small movements and hope it doesn’t come down to magic.”
“It’d make me cry to apprate us out of here and abandon this baby, but I’ll do it if it’s dinosaurs with thumbs.” Hope muttered, just loud enough for Rose to hear. She flipped a few switches, diverting power and shutting down rear propellers with a sigh, before leaning back in her chair and putting her headset on. “Alright, I’ll see if I can open a line of communication. Annnnd maybe check to see if we’ve got any playing cards in here or something?”
This wasn’t good and Rose didn’t like it. She wasn’t really sure what they could do about it other than try and reach anyone above. She nodded at the comment about playing cards, if they were going to be stuck for that long they could use it. The hours passed slowly, nodding off here and there but she was pretty sure neither of them had slept especially well.
Rose felt a small jolt and lept to her feet. “We are free.” She said a little sceptical but jumped into her command seat and started to slowly move the sub forward. “Do you see the dino?” She asked Hope as she whipped her hands across her eyes pushing herself to wake up fully.
“First dino, then Starbucks.” Hope came awake pretty fast, but still had to rub a hand over her eyes and sit up straight in her chair before leaning forward to press a few buttons. “Alright, lights on-” It only took a moment to see the large, swimming creature before them, and Hope jumped in her seat in surprise. “Oh shit- Yep. Yep.”
A few buttons later and the engine was moving a little faster. “C’mon big buddy, let’s go visit that nice anomaly.” To Rose, she nodded at the radar. “Forward and to your left. Not too far.”
“I could go for an overcomplicated latte about now,” Rose mused as she continued to flip a few switches checking to make sure everything was working. “I don’t think I’ll ever get used to seeing things like that.” She added as they did their best to try and herd the thing towards the anomaly. “A little to the left,” she muttered speaking more to the huge swimming creature in front of them than to Hope.
The Anomaly wasn’t too far away now and it seemed like the Pilosaurs was headed in the right direction. “Let’s be careful so we don’t get sucked into it.”
“Wait until they show up in Atlantis proper,” Hope waggled her eyebrows and edged them to the left a little, quieting as they got close to the anomaly. The big prehistoric beast swam ahead, currents pulling them a little faster than anticipated, but then he was sucked back into the anomaly.
And so were they. “Fuck- Hang on.” As they navigated back around, Hope’s hand glowed a little on the controls in the middle, giving them a sudden burst of speed to help pull them back out of the anomaly now that the Pilosaurs was relocated.
“You’re joking right?” Rose asked turning to look at Hope with sceptical eyes. When was that supposed to happen? Was all she could think about until they started to get pulled in.
The burst of speed shot them forward, Rose quickly turned the sub away from an unsuspecting shark that luckily turned the other direction as they pushed passed it. She could still feel the hints of being pulled by the anomaly bit was weakening.
“No way, you should’ve seen Ian’s face.” With him being something of an uncle to her, it was double hilarious for them all. And quotable. Hope’s grin faltered as the sub jerked, but ultimately pulled away safely, heading towards the docks. Finally, she let out a deep breath, and disengaged magic from the engines.
She gave Rose a pointed look. “Let’s never do that again, kay?”
