The whole experience of Narnia was behind her but the reality of what they were truly up against bombarded Alicia’s mind as she headed towards one of the many training rooms. One thing was for sure, Alicia was going to train more. She was going to get into better fighting shape but magically and physically. Walking past one of the rooms she glanced in catching sight of Wanda. Alicia didn’t know her especially well, but she did know that she was a powerful person who from what she’d heard was raw talent. She’d talked to some of the people at HQ and heard about her having met her only briefly during one of the briefings. Something about Wanda kind of reminded Alicia of herself. Not that she would ever express that to anyone, but she did. Knocking on the partly open door, Alicia smiled softly. “Up for some practice?” Alicia asked. “I could use some right now for sure, especially with someone else.” After the battle in Narnia, Wanda kept to herself for a couple of days. She was tired after the battle, and a little sore and shaken up, but nothing that wouldn’t pass easily. She’d been lucky compared to a lot of the others and only received a few minor bruises and scratches. She’d seen what happened to Steve, Hope, and others that she’d gotten to know. She felt their pain, and she felt it when each person injured didn’t make it. Not nearly as strong as when she’d felt Pietro die, but it hadn’t been since the fight in Sokovia that she’d felt that pain in her chest. Seeing Steve, though, even though he came through, that had been one of the hardest parts of the fight. Even if he didn’t know her here, he was this larger than life force that never faltered. He’d lived through being trapped in ice for decades. He’d survived so much, and he wasn’t supposed to have anything happen to him in this way. Finally, though, Wanda decided to step out from her room and ventured out and into one of the training areas. Training with her magic could be difficult sometimes in a controlled environment, but she did what she could most of the time. She practised levitation of objects and herself but she also especially practised her aim and the timing of her blasts. She’d only just arrived and was walking around the room, surveying her surroundings when she heard the soft knock at the door and looked up to see Alicia in the doorway. She knew the other girl somewhat, but only in passing. She’d witnessed some of her magic when they were in Narnia but wasn’t exactly sure how it worked. She smiled. “I’d like that, yes. It can be hard sometimes to practice on your own.” She stepped into the middle of the room and tried to get a good look at the girl. “You weren’t hurt badly in the battle were you?” “Especially when you haven't a clue what you could be dealing with.” Alicia countered with an outwardly confident smile. “Alright. Rounds? Keep it lightish, nothing that’d send either of us to medical but we might have to deal with some limping for a bit.” Alicia suggested. As she got ready, she paused turning to look towards Wanda. “Do you want to practice more calculated attack or purely defensive?” Wanda shook her head a bit. “No, not really; only minor scrapes and bruises.” She knew that others, including a friend of Alicia, had been killed in one of the battles. She knew better than most that lives were a cost of war, but she hadn’t expected that here so quickly. Especially when they were fighting someone else’s war for them rather than fighting their own. Smiling, Wanda nodded. She didn’t mind getting a bit on the rough side for practice because taking it easy or pulling punches would only hinder them the next time it came for a fight. Why take it easy when the enemy never did? “Perhaps a bit of both? Change it up once we get going? We can start with calculated, if you’d like.” For Wanda, defensive spells were more of a reflex that she needed to practice. Calculated spells were those that she needed to work on mastering with her new teammates. She’d really only started getting the hang of it when she was working solely with the Avengers. Raising one of her hands, she started swirling a bit of her magic around in her palm briefly but soon let it fizzle away. “This is the first time I’ve really worked with others who use magic in a fight.” Except for Vision, but she didn’t mention him. “I’ve been used to backing up, clearing the field, and assisting others.” Alicia nodded, she could go with both pretty easily. “Well, I guess let’s go with what you might want to practice more?” She said thoughtfully as she tried to figure out exactly what perhaps Wanda needed to work on, Alicia would be fine with either. “Yeah? Well, it’d be probably good for both of us to work with different kinds of magic, we’ve probably got some similarities, but we might be able to practice some new stuff too. If you don’t mind me asking, how does your magic work?” “I don't mind.” She let a little more of the magic flow from her fingertips. “It's a bit hard to explain, but my brother and I were given abilities through experimentation involving a very powerful stone. He was given super speed, and I.. well, I was given this.” The red swirls grew a bit larger in her palm. “It's inside of me somehow now. I heard one of the scientists once mention that the hexes involved probability manipulation or manipulation of chaos magic.” She knew it sounded confusing because she didn't completely understand it all herself. Von Strucker hadn't been exactly forthcoming with how the experiments were done at the time. “The hexes, though, they act a lot like… telekinesis, I think? Moving objects or affecting natural forces like kinetic energy or gravity.” She didn't go into her mental abilities as most people didn't like the idea that she could affect their minds. It was the part of her powers she hadn't used in a while after what happened during the Ultron fiasco. “Does any of that make sense? I haven't had the powers very long. Two or three years.” Alicia nodded as Wanda explained, tilting her head as she thought about how exactly that might work. “So, basically you can send really powerful waves that could knock people out, among other things?” She asked thinking about how useful that would be. “We’ve got some spells that can do things like that.” She added thoughtfully. “I think, this might sound weird too, but I could toss some hexes into the air, or at the bag over there and you could see what it’s like to stop them? I’m not really sure what our magic will do once combined, which could also be really cool to explore, especially if we end up on missions together because that could be a really powerful weapon.” Alicia tended to think about how things could work together. “Or combining what you can do with pre-made potions…” She said shaking her head. “I’m getting ahead of myself, but what you said makes sense, I think it sounds like learning control. We went to school for years at home to learn how to work and control our magic.” Wanda nodded. “Yes, basically. There are…” She paused and tilted her head to the side for a moment as she decided what and what not to share. “There are other aspects to what I can do aside from the hexes. A telepathy of sorts where my powers access the neuro-electric interface in one’s mind. Sometimes, like if a person is projecting strongly, I have trouble not seeing what’s inside, but I don’t purposely go into another’s mind.” Anymore. She hadn’t used that part of her abilities offensively since Ultron. There had been so much devastation as a result. It may not have solely been her fault, no, but she bore a lot of the responsibility no matter what Steve, Vision, and the others had tried to convince her otherwise. It probably wouldn’t have weighed so heavily on her if not for Pietro’s death. She still felt that every day. “It may be that those are needed on a mission but not for what we’d be doing here today. The only others that know about that part of my ability are those from my own world since most people probably would not like the idea of a person who’s able to roam around in their thoughts. And I suppose anyone who’s watched the movies.” Wanda certainly hadn’t watched them herself. She nodded and smiled a little. “I like that idea - of working together in tandem. Perhaps if when you conjure a spell, I may be able to blast it with a force that strengthens it? It allows it to hit multiple targets at once.” She wasn’t exactly sure how it would work, but she was willing to see what happened with a few tests. They could work up to more advanced and stronger spells as they became comfortable with each blast or spell. Wanda took a couple of steps back and readied herself, a small red ball of magic forming in her hands. “I’m ready when you are.” “So, you can read minds?” Alicia muttered when Wanda used the more scientific words. She was quiet afterwards until she was done explaining it. “I can see where that’d be somewhat of a problem, but I think with the right training it could also be extremely useful. I’m not saying you should rush into it or anything, but I think it sounds like something that you could really get a handle on with practice.” She said being supportive. “There is bound to be someone here with some similar powers. There are parts of what I can do that can get to a degree of what you are talking about, but I haven’t practiced them in years.” She admitted. “Playing professional sports doesn’t really lead to practicing some stuff.” “Hey, don’t worry about me.” Alicia said. “If you do find yourself reading minds by accident and I’m around focus on me and focus on my thoughts and block out the others.” She offered. “Hey, you might learn some secret family recipes, but if you do I will swear you to secrecy and you’ll owe me wine, or vodka.” She added the vodka based on Wanda’s accent more than anything else. “I like it.” Alicia said with a grin. Without a hesitation she forced as she tossed her own Expecto Patronum. A Falcon spread out towards the targets set up for practice.. Mind reading could definitely be useful. Wanda acknowledged that much, but in her experience, it was also dangerous. Well, the part where she could manipulate minds so that they saw their worst fears come to life was dangerous. The mind reading was just a part of that. She appreciated how understanding Alicia was being about it though, and she smiled a bit with a nod. Perhaps once she was able to work on her defensive magic with her or others, she could begin to open up that door again. “I think I can offer wine or vodka even without pilfering family recipes.” But now wasn’t the time. While she stood ready, she watched as Alicia skillfully waved her wand a bit and said the incantation. She wasn’t sure what she expected but seeing a silvery falcon emerge and begin to fly around wasn’t it. It was stunning, and she was captured in awe for a short moment before she regained her senses and sent one of her hexes towards the Falcon. The hex wasn’t sense with the intent to destroy but to strengthen. Wanda didn’t use a wand or speak a verbal spell with her magic, but the intent usually came from within. The moment the hex hit the falcon, the animal wavered a bit but then almost looked like it burst into nearly a dozen pieces. Wanda nearly covered her mouth in surprise since she hadn’t expected the Patronus charm to break apart but instead watched as the pieces began to soar and form into multiple falcons that bombarded the targets. Looking back at Alicia, Wanda smiled slightly. “That was kind of cool.” How or what would happen to her falcon wasn’t something Alicia was completely sure about. She focused on her spell but watched as Wanda started to work her own magic. In some ways Alicia wished she had her very own internal magic without a wand. She had it, and she could access some of it but a wand did make everything a lot easier. “Bloody hell.” Alicia said as she watched as the Falcon started to break apart and form into different ones. “Okay, this could be extremely useful, especially to overwhelm, distract or even take someone down.” She said with a grin. “Practically it’s probably not something that everyone understands.” She said to her thoughtfully. “I like it.” “I’ve never seen anything quite like that before,” Wanda said, still a bit in awe. “That was beautiful. Did you call on the Falcon specifically or is it different each time?” She wasn’t familiar with the Patronus charms, so finding out that each wizard or witch had their own would be intriguing in and of itself to her too. She tried to think of another way to practice another spell or how she might try to manipulate one of Alicia’s to their advantage. It would largely depend on what type of opponent they were fighting. In Narnia, they had been fighting all sorts of animal hybrids. She somehow doubted most other worlds would have the same type of battles. “It seems like my magic somehow intensifies yours to a degree. It may not work the same with all other types of spells, but it’s something to go on. What other types do you use more often in battles?” “It’s actually called a Patronus. Mine happens to be a Falcon. For the most part, they don’t change, but there are cases where a person's Patronus does change. It’s like a protector. The main cause is to fight Dementors and drive them away. They’re soul-sucking creepy evil things, but it can be used for other things, and it’s kind of like your personal helpful friend, which I’m sure none of my Professors would approve of it being described like that, but that’s how I see it.” She said shrugging. “Katie’s got a butterfly, for example.” “We might as well try something. I wonder what would happen during the middle of a transfiguration of something. Here. I’m going to try and turn this coin into a knife, while I’m doing that maybe see what happens if you try and intensify it.” She said tossing the coin up in her hand before placing it on the ground. “Let’s just hope it doesn’t end up in exploding knifes.” She said with an amused smile. Without hesitation, Alicia pointed her wand at the coin and started to say the right words as the coin started to transform from the simple coin into a small knife. Alicia tried to on purpose take her time, so Wanda had time to do something with it. “Patronus,” Wanda repeated the term aloud. The verbiage was new to her, but the explanation Alicia gave for the different forms made a lot of sense. It was somehow connected to the caster. A protector - she liked the idea of that very much. The next term, transfiguration, was much more self-explanatory, and Wanda didn’t need to ask for more clarification of what the spell was supposed to be. A new ball of red energy swirled around in Wanda’s hands as Alicia started the spell. Wanda expanded her hands slightly and then quickly moved them forward as if shoving the hex towards the coin as it was being changed into the knife. There was a slight pulse of energy in the room and she saw the knife begin to take shape out of the coin. At first, Wanda didn’t think that anything different had happened but after the knife took form, it began to expand and grow. Slowly at first but then much more quickly. “Watch out!” She gasped and pulled Alicia with her as they both stumbled back away from the growing knife. By the time it had stopped getting larger, the knife’s blade was about the size of an average dinner table. Taken back by surprise, Wanda just stared at the knife then looked over at Alicia. “Well.. I suppose that could be useful somehow if we’re facing a giant.” The right response probably should have been fear but as Alicia watched the knife grow she started to laugh and as Wanda dodged it and pulled Alicia away she just kept laughing. “Well, I guess if we are facing a giant, we’ll have the edge on them.” She said between laughs. “And a least we didn’t have to dodge multiple knifes.” “Okay.” Alicia said catching her breath as she stood up straight. “Let’s see what happens…” She performed the reversal on the spell and while normally it’d turn back into itself. In this case as the magic turned it back into a coin it was a rather large coin before pulsing and bursting into little coins. “TAKE COVER!” Alicia said pulling Wanda down under a weight pressing bench as coins showered down. Once it stopped she started laughing. “Well, Guess we figured out how to potentially take out a few eyes.” She couldn’t help it, but once the other girl started to laugh, Wanda found herself doing the same thing. A giant knife. How crazy was that? She could almost hear PIetro’s sarcastic commentary in the back of her mind as if he was watching from somewhere. Watching as Alicia started to change the knife back into the coin, the dozens of coins came bursting out instead. They hunkered down underneath one of the exercise benches and this time Wanda started laughing too. She laughed hard enough that even her sides began to hurt a bit. Once the coins stopped raining down on them, they climbed out from the under the bench. Wanda looked at all of the coins they were surrounded by and just kind of shook her head. This was unreal yet amazing. “Take out a few eyes and possibly give someone a bad headache by tossing these at their heads.” She grinned and bent down to pick up one of the coins. It looked exactly like the original one that Alicia had initially transfigured. The wheels in her head began to turn, and she held the coin out in her open palm. Using her magic, the coin lifted weightlessly from her hand and levitated in the air. With some concentration, all of the other coins were lifted in the air. Wanda made a swirling motion with her hands until all of the coins were jumbled together in a large globe. The red ball of energy in her hands intensified as she put pressure on the coins, bringing them closer and closer together. With one swift clinch of her fingers into fists, the red ball of energy disappeared as did the ball of coins. The only piece left was one single coin that dropped to the floor in front of both girls. “If dropped at a high enough height it could kill someone.” She said looking over at Wanda. “Probably not a great way to go, or for anything other than a targeted hit but…” She let her words trail off. Watching Wanda, Alicia had her wand at the ready should something come up that she’d need to help with. Really, there was no telling what would happen with their combined magic and she had a feeling they had a lot to learn and a lot to figure out. “Well, looks like you’ll be able to defend against some of our spells.” She said. “Okay, so let’s see what happens if you start something and I toss it at yours?” Alicia offered. “True. Sometimes you must work with what you have in any battle.” Wanda knew that all battle situations weren’t ideal, nor were you given open spaces to cast spells in effectively or safely. She knew that all too well from spells gone awry. Target hits such as these with something like a coin were a lot less dangerous for bystanders than throwing a bomb into a civilian building. “That sounds like a good idea.” Starting with her magic may have required a more calculated attack given how each of the types of magics appeared to work. Still, though, they were learning a lot and developing a trusting friendship in the process. Wanda was glad to learn more about other types of magic, and Alicia seemed to be feeling the same. As she started up another hex in the palms of her hands, she realized she was feeling a bit more comfortable in her skin again. Training with spells in this way was different than home, but the training itself was very familiar. And she was looking forward to finding much more about herself and her powers in the process. |
