Snooping around the police station was a good idea. In fact, it was a great one. A new private detective in town needed to get acquainted with the local police force. Better she get a feel of it first and introduce herself at some point than have to bump into them at an inconvenient time. Usually then they just get all pissy. Fun, but she could start over here without Lamb.
She did have a tendency to annoy them though.
Veronica walked through the doors and peeked around the room, walking quiet as a mouse, just so she could see as much as she could before someone noticed her. It was a skill she'd learned long ago.
This wasn't supposed to happen though. She was going to be a lawyer, but now she was here, right back to where she'd been. Only this time, she was the boss and wasn't taking jobs on the side to help her dad. Destiny, maybe? Nah. Maybe this is just what she was best at, what she needed to do and certain people weren't here to to lead her down the dark rabbit hole.
New start. New everything. Save creativity. There was a reason for all of this.
Her eyes darted over parts of the room. Computers and notes that were too far away to be useful to her even if she'd needed them, jackets and pens. Oh and... "Hey," Veronica called out to a man with a rather nice head of brown hair. It was time. She'd seen all she could see without getting into trouble. And again, that's not what she wanted to do here...yet, at least.
Quiet or not, Dyson had heard the petite blood snooping around the place. His shifter senses didn’t miss much, but he’d allowed her the curiosity while keeping alert in case she was up to no good. She had that newbie aura that suggested she was a newcomer to Atlantis - he knew most everyone else who was here, anyway, by virtue of having been here so long.
“Can I help you?” he asked, looking up as if he’d just noticed the young woman.
“Yeah,” she replied, smiling gently over at the guy. Assessing him came quick. There was some stuff you could just gleam off of a person in an instant. Some say a snap judgement, Veronica said being smart. Older. Maybe mid thirties, early forties. Serious, took his job seriously, she guessed from his eyes.
“I’m Veronica Mars. I’m new here. Thought I’d introduce myself since I’ll probably be running into you sometimes,” she spoke as she walked toward him and finally offered her hand, still a few steps away. “I’m a private detective.”
“Dyson Thornwood,” he said, reaching out to shake her hand with a firm grip. “You’re new to Atlantis.” It was a statement, not a question. He recognized her as one of the new arrivals on the alerts. Atlantis PD didn’t have extended files on those not under the villain protocol, but he still had his resources to find out about the latest arrivals, especially when they were assigned near his area.
“Your reputation precedes you, Veronica,” he added without expression. She was smart, he knew that much, but she also seemed to be trouble. He hadn’t made up his mind if he liked her, yet.
“You’ve already heard of me?” For one of the few times talking to people here, Veronica was surprised. She hadn’t exactly caused much trouble yet, unless she was slipping and wasn’t even aware. He must have had an in with the processing people. Yes, that had to be it.
Veronica plastered on a bright smile and nodded. “Nice to meet you Dyson.” Interesting name. Must have had interesting parents, but it strangely suited him in a that didn’t make his name seem all that strange.
“I’m not losing my touch then,” she said, cracking a smile. “Not interrupting anything pressing, I hope?” she nodded toward his desk, looking distantly over the paperwork and all the not so fun things that went with being an actual cop.
Dyson shook his head. “At the risk of jinxing myself, it’s been a pretty slow week,” he said with a shrug. Most of his work for the day involved a stack of paperwork, which he wasn’t really looking forward to.
“What do you think of Atlantis so far, Veronica Mars?” her asked her.
“What do I think?” Veronica blew out a breath and looked around as if the police station would put something witty and wise into her mind. But nope. Just the truth, which was she hadn’t made up her mind about it.
“I think it’s kinda crazy what’s happening. It’s a pretty cool place though.” He didn't need to know that she was homesick for a home she didn’t even technically live at anymore. “You hear stuff in your life and then... “ she grinned. It was real. Lots of it. “Yeah. It’ll need a few more people to win me over completely, but it’s not bad. You love it?”
“I’ve been here long enough that it’s become home,” Dyson answered. He wasn’t sure if love was the right word, even if he did love a couple of the people in Atlantis. Sometimes the weird things that happened could be a pain in the ass and he had people he was missing here, as well, but there were worse places to be and Atlantis certainly wasn’t without its charms.
“You’re new. It takes some time to settle in and get used to all of this.”
Veronica shrugged. It made sense. Anywhere could become home if you let it. Plus, this place wasn’t so bad. Even still, it was good to hear it from someone, maybe not like her, but like her enough that she could believe him.
Well, if I need a cop. I know where to go. He seemed reasonable enough, plus you always needed a cop to vet, to hand stuff off to. Her dad had Sacks. She wasn’t stupid enough to assume he’d be that easy to ‘partner’ up with, but he was still a candidate; a possibility.
Veronica reached into her pocket and pulled out a card and held it out in front of her. “If you ever need to get a hold of me.” For things he couldn’t strictly handle in the system. She could scratch his back if need be.
Taking the card, Dyson nodded. He’d had a similar kind of partnership with Bo, although that had also been something completely different. His relationship with Bo was complicated at best. Still, there was something in this girl’s manner that reminded him of it, somehow, even though at first glance, they couldn’t be more different.
“Thanks,” he said. Maybe he’d make use of it, maybe he wouldn’t. For all its strange occurrences, things could be quiet around the Atlantis PD, but you never knew when that might change.
“No problem,” Veronica smiled faintly. At least he wasn’t being an asshole. Such an improvement over...well half the cops she’d ever known. “I’ll see you around then, I’m sure.” Veronica eyed him carefully, trying to pick up any remaining flecks of personality to put away for later. You never know when you would need someone and their particular talents.
Veronica grinned wider and gave him a nod before turning around and walking toward the door, back out into the regular world. “Well that went better than I thought.”
