“Bruce! ….Bruce!” Betty ran up the creaking wooden stairs of the dingey, dark apartment complex, nearly falling face first into the wall that turned onto the second set of steps as she tripped over one of the stray cats that always seemed to linger in the hallway. “Lo siento, gattito…” she murmured down to the animal. The woman must have been causing quite a stir in the building because as she stood back up she met as with one of the more elderly tenants who glared at her through the threshold of her apartment. “Pardon…” Betty blushed. “Bien dia…”
Running up the stairs, Betty made more of an effort to make less noise, which given the stairs and state of the rickety building itself was rather difficult but she was simply too excited. She held a newspaper grasped tightly in her hand, one with multiple stamps and delivery notices etched across the top. Once she reached the top floor and found herself rather out of breath, she opened the apartment door and resumed calling for her love.
The apartment was presumably empty but he could be have been in one of the other rooms; perhaps in the shower? The wooden floors, walls and windows were plain and the place was minimally furnished. Only the necessities were present- only what they needed to survive. The only adornment seemed to be a sheer, powder blue curtain fluttering in the meager breeze.
When Betty left, Bruce was fast asleep and she slipped into the Uruguay market place alone, where she picked up a newspaper and read the UFN‘s decision to pass the Superpower Registration Act. Today’s news was certainly cause for celebration. Today they had an opportunity to go home, if Bruce so wished. It was his choice to register or not. She would follow him no matter what. The law had passed and he needed to know. Where was he?!
