Daphne and Pansy
Who: Daphne Greengrass and Pansy Parkinson
When: Just after the announcement
Where: Slytherin Commons
Rating: tba
Warning(s): tba
Status: incomplete

Daphne didn’t like this, she didn’t like this one bit. Or perhaps it would have been better to say that she liked it to much and it was that fact that was driving her crazy. She was sitting in an over stuffed green chair absent mindedly listing to a few younger girls chatter on about the new journals. Daphne sighed. This was going to be a long year. A long year of having what she truly wanted paraded around in front of her and yet knowing she couldn’t have it and nothing to distract her but her studies. And while she kept herself sane by thinking of that but she knew in the back of her mind it wasn’t true.

She needed Blaise, she needed him to keep her grounded. Without him she wasn’t so sure she could keep herself grounded. She sighed.

A long year indeed.

Pansy wanted to throw things. She had attempted to contain herself, had tried her very best to act civilly and adhere to the protocols of ladylike behavior, but everything, it seemed, was working against her. The very notable lack of men, and particularly, of him, was certainly not helping things, her frustrations mounting, culminating on a sexual level, as well. Her inner turmoil, however, was kept perfectly beneath a facade of nonchalant serenity, an icy mask she'd long since learned to use aptly, an expert at keeping things under wraps, her feelings in particular.

As she entered the commons, she spotted Daphne on one of the large green chairs, and approached, past the chatter of the younger girls, who nodded at her in greeting, as she nodded and offered a cordial smile. She seated herself in the armchair nearest Daphne's spot, placing a book and scroll down on an endtable next to her, her arithmancy work, finished in the library as she had tried to keep her mind off of the storm of things she was feeling inside.

"Evening, Daphne," she greeted, trying to sound the way she usually did around her housemates and those in her social circles -- polite, reserved, and not at all like anything was the matter.

Daphne looked up with almost a start at the sound of her voice. Normally she can tell when Pansy is coming from around the corner. The sound of her gate, the smell of her perfume so ingrained in the small witches mind she couldn’t shake it. Most people thought Daphne followed Pansy around because of the other girl’s power and charisma, her parents thought it was because of Pansy’s prestige and neither of those would have been the small girl’s true intentions. Daphne loved the way she walked, the way she held herself and how she personified almost everything Daphne admired. But studying the other girls as Daphne often did she could read her easily and she knew the subtle variations in her voice and when she greeted her Daphne knew something was off.

“Hello Pansy.” Daphne said looking up a small smile on her face as the other girl sat near to her. “How are you tonight?”

Pansy allowed herself a slight shrug and a soft sigh, the thought that she'd taken delight at the slight near-start evident in Daphne's voice, at first, wholly subconscious (or, at least, that was what she would swear, to herself, especially). It was, she would reason, in her head, just that Daphne seemed to always know when she was approaching, never surprised or anything of the sort, and there was something about the thought of precisely that -- catching her off guard -- that excited Pansy. She did not allow herself to venture why.

"I'm alright," she said, trying not to think too hard on the small smile that graced the other girl's lips. "And you?" she inquired, tucking her long, dark hair back behind her ears, and crossing her legs, looking into Daphne's honey brown eyes as she asked. She started to almost play with her hair.

Daphne watched her push her hair behind her ears, and as she began playing with the dark locks. She had to look away from the others girls clear ice blue eyes, feeling that they could look into her soul and she didn’t want that. She looked to both sides, making sure no one was close, taking a little extra second to scout her left side before looking back at her friend “Honestly?” she said with a small smirk “I hate it.” she said softly so her voice wouldn’t carry, knowing full well she shouldn’t speak such things, especially in a public place. But sometimes letting the little things out she knew she shouldn’t do kept the big things inside.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been more depressed here, and I usually love it here.” She confided in the other girl.

Pansy leaned forward, just slightly, as she listened to her friend, nodding once and smirking. "I know precisely what you mean," she said, as candid as she ever got with anyone except Theodore, but then, that was a different situation. Here, she was even being more candid than she had ever been with Draco -- perhaps that had been part of the problem with 'them.' With Daphne, however, there was something she could not quite describe, something that had sparked something she feared even considering.

"It's just not the same." She shook her head, just slightly. "Want to go for a walk?" she asked, gesturing subtly with her eyes at the other girls, implying that increased privacy would probably be best for such discussions.

Daphne smirked “Yes, lets walk.” He chest felt tight with excitement at the thought of Pansy talking openly and freely with her as two girls of their stature shouldn’t. but as she stood the necklace that Blaise had given her thumped lightly on her chest reminding her of things she would rather not be reminded of and that’s when she realized why Blaise had given it to her, not because that’s what boys like him did for girls they had been dating for so long but because he knew she would need a gentle reminder, something to tie her to earth even though he wasn’t here.

She stood flattening out the lines in her skirt caused by sitting.

Pansy felt her insides leap at the words of the other girl, but contained all this beneath her calm, cool, and collected exterior. She rose from her seat gracefully, keeping her eyes from wandering to her friend as she smoothed out her skirt, taking a similar action.

"I'm just going to go put this down in the dormitory," she said, collecting her book and scroll, starting toward the Sixth Year girls' room.

"I'll meet you in the hall." Daphne said with a nod then watched the other girl make her way towards the room they shared. and after a moment she made her way into the hall, the moment she knew the other girl had no chance of seeing her she pulled out a small compact out of her pocket and made sure her makeup was clean and precise, no smudges, and that her hair was laying in a presentable manner. She leaned against the wall, her hand absent mindedly going to her left ear lobe which she tugged on slightly as she waited.

Pansy let out a breath she did not know she was holding as she entered their room, empty, her eyes going to Daphne's bed, though she quickly turned them back to her own things, putting her scroll and book neatly away. She took her own compact from her pocket, making sure she looked flawless, touching up here and there, lightly fixing her subtle gloss, peering into the looking-glass for one last peek and smoothing her hair before exiting. Why was she doing this? It was something she always did... well, most of the times, at least, making herself presentable. Yes, that was it.

She met Daphne in the hall shortly. "Sorry about that," she said, the explication of her not wanting to leave her things laying about in the Commons going unsaid, a presumed understanding.

"In any event," her voice was still quiet, aware of the echoing and carrying that might happen readily in the dungeons, "I think you're absolutely right," she said, gesturing for them to start walking.

It was late, most of the other students, no, other girls where in their commons so that left the halls almost completely empty. Not to mention that Prefects tended to clear hallways extremely quickly. She made sure Pansy was to her right as they started walking, the soft click of their heals echoing off the walls. “No worries.” Daphne said with a small smile as they made their way out of the dungeon and into the school proper.

“All of this, it’s quite ridiculous.” She said after a moment “As if actually splitting up the students could keep us ‘safe’. Sounds like something my mother would suggest after reading something on teen pregnancy.” Daphne said dully.

Pansy chuckled, amused at both the remark and the truth behind it, appreciative of the likely emptiness of the halls. Her genuine laughter, lacking the arctic snob element, was not a thing often heard; indeed, she was sure many would not recognize the sound.

"Honestly, if they wanted to keep us safe," she said, "they'd get rid of all the riffraff, instead. It's really rather disappointing. The only thing that's good that's come out of it is that now there's only one Weasley left here, and Potter and his mess are gone. But at what price? This is all so endlessly frustrating," she said, looking at the other girl now and then as they walked, trying not to focus on the brown eyes, or dark hair, or the very way she was walking.

She made her laugh! Truly laugh and the trill was sweet on her ear. It made Daphne smile and giggle softly in return. The way her perfectly glossed lips curled into a smile and how her laugh lines twinged (she was sure Pansy would hate it if she pointed out that however) she was perfect.

She nodded slowly, “And there is the Grangie one.” Daphne said with a slight tone of annoyance in her voice. Really, if they where going to let dirty mud-bloods into the school the least they could do was make sure they brushed their hair for Merlin’s sake! “I don’t think I have ever felt more frustrated.” Daphne said in agreeance , but then again she was sure they where talking about different sorts of frustration.

Pansy nodded, her attention focusing on the click-clacking of their heels against the stone floor, the soft giggle from the girl next to her causing something inside of her to feel light, a fluttering, almost. Oh, the frustration of the same sort was there, alright, but Pansy didn't know it, just yet.

"She's just unsightly." Not like Daphne. Where had that thought come from? Pansy needed a drink, and a strong one, at that. She was glad for her makeup and the dim lighting, as the heat that rose to her face certainly signified the slightest of blushes, the sort of thing that would be concealed in such circumstances. She smoothed down her hair, as was her habit. "And very, very frustrating." She paused, pursing her lips. "Then, there are those others, like that Jones girl. Honestly, such a tart," she said. "I wouldn't go near her with a ten-foot broomstick. What happened to standards?"

Daphne needed a cigarette, and as they neared a door Daphne tilted her head towards it slightly asking if the other girl wanted to go outside. It was fall but it wasn’t devastatingly cold yet. At mention of the Jones girl Daphne rolled her eyes, it was girls like that who made her skin crawl, girls who pretended to be one way so they could get guys. “Yeah, she really makes me sick.” Daphne said honestly. The fact that she had had several fantasize about her making her even more sick. “It’s as if people don’t know what is proper anymore… or perhaps not even that, its more like people don’t care.”

Pansy nodded, not needing prodding. Perhaps the fresh air outside would be good for her, let her clear her head and get thinking clearly again. She went to the door and held it open for her friend to pass. "It's precisely that. People have no regard for what is acceptable, and go around parading themselves like some kind of--" she stopped herself, gesturing with her hand, as any of the choice of words she wanted to use were not polite for conversation. "You know what I mean. Certain things should just be kept behind closed doors, really." And what did she mean by that, precisely?

Daphne walked past Pansy, to say her words didn’t hurt would have been a grievous lie. But it was the sort of thing she was used to and only reminded the short Slytherin why she had to hide who and what she truly was. “I know what you mean.” She said taking a breath of the cool crisp air, the feeling refreshed her. And it wasn’t long before she pulled out her gold box of Benson and Hedges lights, pulling out a long slinger cigarette and lighting it up. Again something she knew was frowned upon, but again it was about the small evils and not the big one. She inhaled deeply.

“Perhaps I just became to accustomed to the boys being around, but it was nice to have them around. Distracting in the best possible ways.” She said with a little smirk, again double speaking. But Daphne had made an art out of the concept.

Pansy glanced about as the door closed, and pulled out her own Embassy Regals, and lit up with her Zippo lighter, as well, once she saw there was no one else around. She took a drag. Well, it was not Glenlivet, but a nice smoke would do, for now. Did she know what she meant? Pansy thought not -- surely not. There was no way Pansy could imagine, in her mind's eye, that Daphne could fathom the sneaking about, the facades and covers that went to a completely different level than anything she had ever revealed. But then, that was her perception, an at times admittedly flawed and skewed one. She almost envied Daphne for what she had, for so many little things, but it was not that, not that, at all. It was a different feeling, something like admiration, appreciation, but not quite, something she dared not even think.

"It was..." she said, taking a drag. "Very distracting in all the best possible ways." The smirk on her lips and glint in her eyes indicated that there was clearly more to her words than might be evident, but she kept her poise. "It's just... I'm so..." she paused, "frustrated now." The word was stressed, ever-so-slightly, the sort of thing that would be imperceptible to anyone who might not know Pansy, or might not have spent time with her, but there was a very real undertone to it, one that -- and she would probably shudder at the thought -- she hoped Daphne might catch onto.

Daphne smirked. She knew exactly what the other girl meant. Daphne might be the only other girl who knew of Theodore’s and Pansy’s little trysts. After all Daphne was trying to pretend she was normal, and Pansy was the perfect example of what was expected of her and the only way the small witch knew how to pretend to be something she wasn’t was to watch, learn and imitate those who she knew where ‘normal’ and ‘proper’. She smiled into her fag, many of nights Daphne had thought about making Pansy make the same sounds that Theodore had made her make.

“Frustrating is just the beginning of it.” Daphne allowed watching the other girl and her cigarette, the image completely lovely. She forced the thought away, her empty going to her neck and feeling the rubbing the stones of the necklace as if they where a wishing stone and she could wish away her feelings. “I miss them dearly.” But in truth she only missed one.

Pansy observed the smirk, forcing her thoughts not on the very aesthetically pleasing nature of the gesture, how lovely it seemed, or how perfectly it fit on Daphne's exquisite set of features, but rather on the significance behind it. These thoughts, however, were no more comforting to the sense of high-societal protocol that had been bred and instilled into her . The conflicting thoughts were kept well hidden on her face, though her blue eyes showed the hidden turmoil in her, a thing that might only be evident to the couple of people who knew her best.

"I do, as well," she said, taking another drag of her cigarette, her eyes catching how the moonlight reflected off the other girl's features, in what might best be described as almost admiration, again. "Can't say that all of them were a loss, however," she added, an afterthought. After all, not having to deal with Crabbe and Goyle -- guesome, weren't they? -- hopelessly fumbling about the school like freshmen pulling at a panty girdle was an admitted added plus. She exhaled, an almost impreceptible sigh at the start of her next words, "at least, however, I'm in good company." She offered Daphne a smile.

'Admire, but don't say. Look, but don't touch. Conspire, but don't act.' It was a simple set of guidelines that her and Blaise had agreed upon to keep them selves hidden. The first two where the hardest for Daphne; she wanted so badly to tell Pansy how lovely she looked every time she say her, to complement how her glossy locks fell just so or how she loved the way her new robes hugged her in all the right places. To feel if her skin was as soft and supple and she though it would be, to run her fingers though the other girls hair. But she knew why the guidelines had been set in place because if she knew if she did theses things it wouldn't be long before other noticed and after that it wouldn't be long before they put the pieces together and knew her for what she really was. The last one was the easiest, for it was the fantasy's they kept her warm in her own bed late at night.

A cool blush ran over her pale features at Pansy's last statement "Thank you." she said almost coyly "And I would have to agree, the company is quite fantastic." she allowed quite sure if they other person brought it up first she could return the complement and still adhere to the rules. "And I would have to agree that not all the boys are missed," she added with a sly smirk her blush fading "I don't think the wobble twins will be missed in the slightest...by anyone. Its nice to have an open variety for meals if you show up late and not have to deal with what ever is left over after they have gorged themselves." she added with a slight laugh under her words.

Pansy smirked, just slightly, feeling something race in her at the coyness in the other girl's voice. "You're very welcome," she replied, just as coyly. What was she doing? She tried to focus. The sound of the slight laughter beneath Daphne's words, however, was making that quite difficult.

"Yes. That is one fringe benefit to come from all of this," she said. "One of a couple." She ached for some of her Glenlivet, something to take her mind off of things, itched for it, for some sort of release.

Daphne nodded as she finished off her cigarette flicking the end into the darkness and slowly exhaling ribbon of silver from her lips. she tore her eyes away from the other girl to watch the smoke disappear into the night.

Looking back down she could tell that the other girl wasn't saying all that was on her mind, "What are you thinking about?" she inquired softly.

Pansy considered the question, and how best to answer it, taking one last drag of her own cigarette before tossing it, too, off into the dark. The sight of the other girl performing the same action was breathtaking, and the sound of her voice was sweet on her ears.

"Things I probably shouldn't be," she answered, softly, a small smirk making its way to her lips once more.

Pansy nodded, tucking her dark hair behind her ears, looking at the other girl's brown eyes. "It is, most unfortunately," she said, in a matter that suggested it was precisely the opposite. "And I am, as well. What ever is a girl to do?" she asked, taking a strand of her own hair between her fingers and giving it a twirl as she herself took a few steps closer.
