"We there now, Mama?"
The softly spoken words made Charlie sigh softly and peer down at the small boy she was pushing in the stroller. He was half-twisted in his seat and staring up at her with large brown eye that seemed to have far more age and wisdom to them than the scant two years the boy had been alive. His curly, honey-blond hair bounced lightly on top of his head as the stroller hit a small bump in the sidewalk, yet he never took his eyes off of the woman pushing him.
There were some people who found his unflinching attention to be too much to handle. Charlie wasn't one of those people. That was just Bobby's way and, considering how special he was someday going to be to the world, she simply chalked it up to his eventual destiny and left it at that. Of course, considering she was his mother, she also admittedly had much more patience than most others did. She actually found most of his eccentricities endearing. From the fact that he insisted on looking at someone when speaking to them, to the way he just had to walk at her right side and never her left, to his preference of fruit over candy, it was all just a part of him.
Smiling down at him, she finally gave a different answer than the one she'd been giving him since they'd begun their walk nearly half an hour earlier. "We sure are," she stated, her gaze meeting his as she tipped her head toward the large gate that they were approaching. "That's the entrance right there, baby."
Bobby did turn then, his old soul seeming to regress back to his true age at the sight of the sprawling trees and the handful of people milling about. Although she couldn't see his expression, Charlie knew he was smiling. She could feel it down to the very depths of her soul. It made her own smile grow in return... only to have it falter at his next simply spoken words.
"We ain't 'lone, Mama."
Charlie frowned lightly and glanced around as they passed through the gate. "What do you mean by that, Bobby?" she asked when she was unable to figure it out on her own. She absentmindedly pushed the stroller toward a group of trees that didn't have anyone else around that she could see. "Of course we ain't alone. There's people all over, see?"
She knew that wasn't what he meant. She didn't know how she knew, just that she knew. Yet she also wasn't going to jump to any conclusions. Not where her son was concerned. So she waited for his answer, only to have it revealed to her mere moments later when the only other person near the group of trees she'd chosen finally came into view.
Not a person, she thought with a sudden churning in her stomach. An angel. And it ain't my angel, neither. Just great. Michael's gonna be pissed for sure if he finds out about this.
