Who: anyone
Where: all over
When: Day 108, early morning.
What:

When you wake up today, there's a good chance there's something new outside, somewhere. A quote, in any number of places: sketched on your door in charcoal. Drawn in the dirt of your common area. Written by the showers in rocks, arranged by the lake in bones. A shelf in the library, rearranged by the title to spell out something.

If you look nearby, you can probably find the culprit. It's not like he's trying to hide.

Well, it's another one of those Zen things. If that helps.

[tilts her head a little]

Do they ever make sense?

They can. Thinking about them when you can helps sometimes.

Who's Bankei?

Bankei was a Buddhist. He studied something he called "the unborn," which is how he saw the world and enlightenment, but he was pretty straightforward about it. Did a lot of wandering and talking from his own experience.

... so, the moral is that most people are jerks?

Mmm. He was also enlightened. Mostly from not dying of TB. Which might have helped on the "not being a jerk" scale of things.

... Didn't know you could become enlightened like that.

There are lots of ways to become enlightened. Meditation is a standard, not an absolute methodology.

[... nods]

I don't really remember a lot about that kinda stuff.

[nods back]

I had a long time to think about it, in jail.

So you get it, now.

I'd like to think I get something out of it, yes.

How do you interpret it?

He was undivided and undistracted by wants. Which is a really hard thing to do, when you come down to it, but it shouldn't be taken for granted.

... Can't really imagine what it must be like, to live without wanting anything.

It's easier in a place where your goals can be simpler.
