[there's a boy who you haven't seen before in yellow, hovering just outside the door to the Orion dorms and looking around. He looks... not confused, but he could probably use some help]

My mom, when she was home. Normally she was out on missions and the like, but when she did make it back ... I remember her being home for a whole year when I was seven. It was amazing.

Space missions take months at best. She was usually gone for three or four years at a time, and then she'd get a month of leave back on Earth.

... it's just not a great place to raise a family. Hence why a lot of Starfleet Officers stay unattached as long as they can.
