[And taking a seat]

A few months back, one of the other Judges here sacrificed his life to show us the true and secret history of this place. How it came to be, how the the Judges became so twisted, what the surface of this world was like... he showed us by placing our consciousnesses in the bodies of the native people of this world who had once lived on the surface long ago...

I remembered an entire lifetime that wasn't mine, Franz. A job, a family, a fiancee... some nights I still dream about it.

[that makes him remain quiet for a moment]

How was that like?

It was... simple. But good. Technology wasn't very advanced, but there was magic instead. The teams here, they're actually named after the old nations of the surface world. Hydra was a particularly swampy region... I left home to travel around from town to town looking for fix-it jobs where the work was needed-- which was almost constantly in a wet and muddy climate. After years of badgering, I finally got the Head Engineer in the capital city of Cepheus to take me on as an apprentice, even though I was generally considered too old...

... Hahaha, see? There I go again. Referring to that person as "I" even though it wasn't me at all.

I can't say I understand the feeling, but it appears to be an unusual way to show the past.

From what I understood, it was the only way. In reality, reliving all that took not more than a few minutes... when we woke, barely any time had passed at all. Much like when we regain memories here. Any other way of conveying the information would have taken too long ... King did away with the rogue judge only moments later.

And now you have memories of that life.

[Nods]

... You don't need to look like that, though. It doesn't particularly bother me or anything. It was almost kind of nice, getting to see life from a normal person's perspective.

Are you suggesting you're not normal?

Ah... that wasn't quite what I meant, no.

... We're aristocrats back home, Franz.

Aristocrats, huh. I think I might as well get the memory out of the way first, in that case.

[. . . this sure is an intense memory. there's a varied mix of emotions here, but it ends with a somewhat concerned and thoughtful look]

I remembered you.
