...but...I thought food was just food. We eat it because we have to, but why is stuff like that bad?

Bacteria grows on things as they age, so if you eat food that is too old it can make you sick. Some meats have harmful bacteria as well. Cooking them kills the bacteria, but if you do not do it for long enough, there may still be some.

And your body needs many different nutrients to function well, so you need make sure to eat as many of them as you can. So eating only one kind of food means you are not getting the nutrients present in different foods.

[Seems to be taking all this in, pondering it.]

So cooking isn't just taste, but making it healthy too?

Well... maybe saying "cooking" is misleading. "Preparing meals" is probably better. Most foods, even meats if they are fresh enough, are safe to be eaten raw. So cooking them is more for taste. But preparing meals should be done while keeping in mind that we need to eat many different things in the right amounts in order to stay healthy.

....

[Taking a minute to think this over.] I think I get it...

So what I meant was that Yayoi is always trying her best to include food that is good for our health, as much as possible.

[Nods.] I see.

That's good to do, if I understand it right. So I'm glad she does.

...might be good to learn the difference on that sort of stuff. Especially if I still have to live on my own after all this...

Yes, then it would be important to learn.

...do you know a lot about it? Or should I ask Yayoi?

Either would be fine, I think. My father taught me everything that I needed to know to survive.

Yes. So I know about things like cooking and herbs and basic treatment of injuries. I don't mind explaining if you have any questions.

I know treatment stuff. I've seen Lacerta do that. As for cooking, it's only been what I've seen Watanuki do, but that always seems to be a taste thing...

He would have been taught at some point, but eventually it becomes almost instinctive.

True. But I mean...for any part I might have helped with.

Do you mean like asking you to taste what he made?

[Nods.] And get things and stuff like that.

But I don't get how any of that might make it healthy or something like that.

Unfortunately most things that are healthy are considered to be less tasty.

You should ask him to teach you. I think he would be really happy to do that.

Probably because they aren't usually sweet.
