[Draws no other attention to it, and simply resumes occasionally petting his hair.]

For good reason. If you did, it would be far more difficult, if you even managed to be successful at all.

I don't need you to tell me this.

No. You do not. But whether the results of your choices were what you hoped for or not, you cannot divorce them from the situation in which they were made.

There were other choices. Just not acceptable ones.

But the game has ended, and the requirements placed upon you by our patron have been fulfilled. Where we go from here is something we all can choose.

There is no need to. For now, you should concern yourself most with rest. You and Pyre both.

I shouldn't . . . There's chores to do.

And there are ten others here, six of whom are perfectly capable of supporting those of you involved in this game while you recover in whatever ways best suit you.

It is not different at all. Besides which, if you rest, it will set a good example for the others. They are far more likely to take what time they will need if following your lead.

No one should be following my lead.

I always . . . always do these kinds of extreme things. Even if people are telling me it's going to cause problems, I can't . . . I have to do it. I can't back down the way everyone else wants to do sometimes. And it always turns out like this. Everyone thinks we're the bad guys. And maybe that's been fine, but it keeps getting worse and worse no matter what I—even if all I want is to fucking survive . . .

The first time, me and Fang were killed. Next, someone nearly tricked our teams into killing Excel with their own hands. You saw the fight that began this time. What are they gonna do now? What's going to happen next time you all follow my lead?!

You are basing your argument on the premise that abdicating leadership will make you somehow less likely to entrench yourself on a course of action when objections to it are raised. While my experiences are very obviously limited, from my observations of the choices you made when you began to remember the old world, that is unlikely to be the case.

To be at all successful, the beginnings of moderation must begin within you. Without that, it can no more be forced upon you by a higher authority than it can be requested of you by a lower.

But I can't . . . That's what I'm saying—I can't. I can't accept being wiped out, but then it turns out like this! Even if I know that I just—I couldn't even think about it! That Lepus bitch told us we were on our own and I couldn't think about anything else!

Acknowledging that much to yourself is till a good first step.

I may have an idea for a second, if you do truly wish to work to change.

Moderation is neither total acquiescence nor a reversal of opinion. It is simply the determination of a middle ground.

If I may make a suggestion, begin by seeking some level of compromise. Not necessarily with all points presented, but ensure there is at least one that is not your own.

You will not always be happy. The greatest difficulty in this is that it will require you to give ground, as well as hold it. But in return, we will stand unified when facing whatever consequences may come from those actions, because the decisions that formed them are ones all had a personal stake in. It will not fall to any one person to bear the entire measure of that weight alone.
