...mm. I'll give you that. Let me rephrase: it's vastly unlikely that, even given the power and the opportunity, a Blank would be that insane.

And the power and the opportunity would be pretty big obstacles themselves.

Speaking of weird things going on with Judges... I think it's about time for our third category.

History lesson? Seems like it. We've been piecing this together for a while -- it started before I woke up -- but we just got a big chunk of it about a week ago. Stop me if you need explanation on anything.

A long time ago -- centuries, or millenia, who knows -- people could live on the surface of this plane. There were many nations, each with their own customs and alliances and magic, but all worshipping the same gods. Among their names were Cygnus, Pyxis, Hydra, Vulpecula, Lepus, Cepheus, Orion, Monoceros, Lynx, Corvus, Delphinus, Pavo, Canis and Lacerta. We're pretty sure Ursa and Cetus were in there too, but without anyone to be caught in Weaver's tapestry, nobody got any information on them.

So each team corresponds to a nation? I'm with you so far.

The clothes you're wearing are what teams initially had; what we're wearing now are the clothes common in the nations we represented. I'm not sure if you'll eventually upgrade or not.

Thanks to Weaver, we got to directly experience the last days of the surface...a period of two or three years, plus the associated memories and history. The Judges were gods, then, but there were two primordial forces beyond them: the Old Man who was the earth, and the Old Woman who was the sun. After about a subjective year, something happened -- we don't know what -- and the Old Woman began to burn off the surface of the world.

Burn off the surface? But then everyone living there-

Exactly.

The gods commissioned the building of a huge shelter, through their priests at Ophiuchus. Every nation brought all they could, and it was completed just before the Old Woman's fury reached lethal levels. Everyone and everything who wasn't in it died then, and it was only barely blessed in time to save the people inside. But they managed, somehow, and for a while it was a paradise inside.

Yeah. We didn't get that part, but they were supposed to be able to leave by that year's spring. They didn't.

And guess where we are now.

Good guess, but no.

One more piece of the history lesson, and it's just as uplifting as the rest. Trickster and Flowers were...man and wife is really the wrong term...omnipotent malevolent being and omnipotent less-malevolent being? Unfortunately, her power was over the cycle of life and death, and that's sort of been frozen here -- the god of death, the Gentleman, chose not to take part in the shelter. So she was starting to die, and Trickster tried to save her by holding a Game. It was in her honor, so maybe he hoped it would rejuvenate her.

It didn't seem to be helping, and he got frantic enough that he straight-out demanded that someone sacrifice someone to her. And someone did.

... And since you mentioned her in the explanation earlier, that means it worked. And so that means...

[info]blue_mind_group

It worked, but it drove her mad, we think. Maybe madder; only Hydra claims to have known much about her before then.

It's not like they regularly sacrifice people to keep themselves alive, but the Games feed them. And when they ran out of people native to the plane, which was pretty much inevitable, they started importing outsiders. It's conjecture, but...

*spreads his hands*

Welcome to Sabra La Tau.

The good news is, most of us think there's a chance to break the cycle, and that it involves knowing all of this. Surgeon wasn't the sort of Judge who'd do anything on a whim; he planned everything. And he didn't seem to give much of a damn about us except as test subjects, so it can't have been for our benefit -- and it must have been something worth risking his own destruction for.

But of course he didn't give any instructions or even clues to what he might want you to do with the information, and instead just sort of left you alone with a head full of knowledge to puzzle it out for yourself. Right?

Yeah, I picked up on that part. Whatever it is Surgeon wanted, King doesn't want, and if you're going to piss off anyone here it probably shouldn't be the omnipotent guy named after a ruler. Right?
