[ the puppy runs right through the gap between the floor and the first board-- high enough for boys to squeeze under-- and is out of the building. ]

[ there's something strange about the light streaming in through the high slit windows all around the warehouse-- it's darker than it should be, even for this time of evening, and the rectangles of light they cast on the floor of the abandoned building shift with strange, wispy shadows. ]

[ and as you get closer to the door, a faint, possibly familiar acrid scent meets your noses. ]

[ and just as Red is mostly free of the door, the yelling can be heard, and sirens begin in the distance. It's immediately apparent why, because that sure is one major conflagration lighting this part of the old industrial zone-- already some of the derelict, more wooden structures are blazing, filling the air with clouds of smoke, the wind both feeding the fire and wafting clouds of smoke down the cul-de-sac the boys stand in. ]

[ not far down the road-- the only way out-- a few workmen scramble out of the way as the main doors of the old pipe factory explode outwards in more flames. ]

[ it's hot to the point that you're already covered in sweat, and as you run past the pipe factory itself the heat is almost enough to sear the skin. most of the smoke, for the present, wafts above your heads. ]

[ but the buildings-- some already burning at the rooftops, some with the light of flames behind glass windows or boards-- are packed wall-to-wall together on both sides of the street, itself only about six metres wide. And the further down the street, the greater the fire seems to have become-- though you can see the junction where you came from before, and the path is clear. ]
