* in today's episode of the continuing Teach The New Kids series: a sizable pile of mushwood outside the dorms, with a few already sawn into beams or planks. There are some basic-- and more importantly, metal-- woodworking tools on-site, including a plane, a crude ruler and a couple of handsaws; one of which he's wielding *

Right, this part's kinda hard work, but basically all you've gotta do is saw as straight as you can...

Well . . . if you think it'll be okay . . .

It'll be fine. No worries.

* picks up the plane *

Right, the next thing you wanna do is make sure the sides are as flat as possible, so you use this.

There's an angled blade tucked just inside, see? When you run it over any wood surface it'll shave off whatever's not even in strips.

That looks even easier than sawing.

It's a little less tiring. But you've gotta be careful which way you run it.

* picks up a smaller block of wood and holds it up for close inspection *

See these lines on the wood?

Hahah... They're the grain. If you run the blade with the grain, it'll shave off nice and smooth, but if you go against it--

* demonstrates, and the surface ends up looking more jagged and splintery *

--that happens.

I'll make sure not to do that.

You wanna give it a go on the piece you just sawed?

* handing over *

You know, you shouldn't worry so much about messing up, when it comes to this kind of thing.
