Breaking down
Characters: Rebekah and Open
Setting: Her room, all day
Rebekah had no idea how long she lay curled up in a ball on her bed crying, all she knew that was after a while she reached a point in which reality crashed heavily on her. She scrambled off her bed, tripping and stumbling in the dark to her bathroom, barely managing to get the lid of the toilet up before the contents of her stomach bubbled up and out. It was like acid in her throat and mouth. When she'd finished, spitting the last of the vomit out of her mouth even if it couldn't stop the bitter taste of it from lingering, she sat back, realizing as the cold floor pressed against her bottom that she was naked from the waist down. The realization caused a sad whimper to sound in the stillness of her bathroom, and the tears started again.
She'd been raped.
She didn't even know how to comprehend that, how it had happened. What had she ever done to make someone want to do that to her? Someone had broke into her room for the sole purpose of hurting her; it was incomprehensible to her.
A little more time was spent crying on the bathroom floor before she forced herself to stand. Rebekah felt her way to her sink, turning the faucet on and cupping her hands under the flow of water. She took a drink, swished it around her mouth, then spat it back out in the direction of the sink. After splashing a little water on her face, she turned the faucet off and then left her bathroom, walking slowly as she felt her way to her dresser. Along the way, she nearly tripped over the balled up pair of socks the man had shoved in her mouth, which caused her to let out another pathetic whimper.
Her hands were shaking when she pulled open the top drawer and felt around for a new pair of underwear. She wanted nothing more than to get in the shower and scrub her skin raw, but instinct rather than intent kept her from doing so. Opening another drawer, she got out a pair of sweats, putting them on before feeling around for her candle and matches. She knew she couldn't do what she wanted to do next without at least a little light.
Even as she lit the candle, Rebekah couldn't stop the tears from flowing, but she tried her hardest to ignore them. Her chest constricted painfully when she caught site of the door knob, the lock that wasn't turned. She'd locked it when she'd got here earlier, she knew she had, and it was unlocked now. How the hell had he managed to break through the lock? she wondered as she quickly locked it again. Panic was quickly welling up in her again, and she gripped the edge of her desk as she tried to push it back down. She needed to move the couch, but she couldn't bring herself to move just yet.
The one thing she'd thought she could count on in this place to keep her safe had failed her tonight, and she couldn't help the fury that rose up in her toward the administration. How could they have let this happen? How could they have put such fallible locks on the rooms of a facility full of convicts with no active guards among them? There was nothing to stop that man from coming back, from hurting her further, and she felt unbearably vulnerable for it.
Rebekah pressed her forehead against the cold door, just trying to get her bearings about her for a moment. When she pushed away, she felt steadier; not by much, but enough to do what she needed to do. With more than a little effort, she managed to push her couch in front of the door - if the lock couldn't keep someone out, then maybe that would.
Her task complete, she found herself at a loss for what to do. Turning, her eyes fell on the bed, gasping as panic squeezed like a vice in her chest. No, it was too soon, way too soon to look at her bed much less try to sleep in it, not that she thought she would be able to sleep anyway. She grabbed her quilt off her couch, blew out her candle, and then climbed under her desk, settling in with her back pressed against the wall.
Although she dozed occasionally, sleep never came.
