Catching Up on the Crazy
Characters: Jae and Brady
Setting: Balcony overlooking the courtyard, early morning
Brady understood the look Jae gave in regards to Antoine, but if he was going to catch her up on things, they simply couldn’t really do that there. And so once she’d agreed to coffee, he headed in the direction of the kitchen, not checking if she was following because he didn’t doubt she would. He was silent on the walk, though, and quiet still as he got his coffee, pouring a cup for each of them. “Let’s head up,” he suggested once that was done, thinking they could just hang out on the balcony, keep an eye on things in the courtyard and still be able to talk without as much chance of others throwing their two cents in.
Jae definitely caught his drift there, and she'd been thinking something similar. So, she grabbed the coffee he poured for her, and departed without a word. This was serious business, as far as she was concerned, and she wanted his take. She didn't think she was familiar with what he was talking about, so she definitely wanted a better assessment.
It was something he liked about Jae so far, that they didn’t need to spell things out to get to a point. He didn’t say anything more until they were upstairs, and he leaned his elbows on the balcony, looking out at the scene below. “So, Antoine. He thinks he’s one smooth mother-fucker. I met him last night,” Brady began before lifting his mug to his lips for a drink.
Jae parked herself next to him, leaning on the railing as well, eyes very much down on the crowd below, particularly the man in question. "How'd that go?" she asked, wanting him to fill in as much as possible. So she gave him the room to do it.
“He’d stalked my journal, commented on one of my entries and we’d talked some there. He fuckin’ invited me for tea and conversation,” Brady said, laughing shortly and shaking his head, clearly still disbelieving that the guy was anything but nuts. “So anyway, ran into him in the kitchen later last night, and we were just talkin’, and then I ask him what he’s in for. He tells me he’s a murderer, so I ask him what he did and why, and that’s when he tells me he killed and consumed twelve people.” He paused, letting that hang there for a moment before glancing at her with a skeptical expression for what he was about to say next. “And, get this, he says it’s because he loved them.”
Jae was usually really great at schooling her reactions to things. But in this case? It didn't happen. There was a clear blink of shock, then a twist or revulsion followed by a wide eyed incredulity. "You've got to be fucking kidding me." she said, even if it was clear she believed him. "Just...tossed that out there, right away. He fucking eats people."
Brady gave her a tight-lipped grimace at her response. "Yeah, didn't even try to pretend otherwise. Made some sarcastic comment 'bout how that's a great way to show someone you love 'em, and he said he couldn't think of any better way. Said some fucking bullshit about how they should be flattered to want to have them so close or something." It made him sick to his stomach to think about, much less talk about.
"What, does he miss the part where he shits them out?" Jae asked drily, shuddering as she looked at her coffee, and wondered if maybe she was going to give up eating. Like, forever. Drinking didn't seem too awesome right now either. "Anyone else getting the impression we need a fucking sheriff in this two bit town?" she asked.
Brady snorted out a humorless laugh at that one. "Guess so. Said we were gonna just have to agree to disagree. Personally? I wanna smash his fucking head in." He nodded at the question. It wasn't something he'd thought of specifically, but now that she'd mentioned it, he did think she was onto something there. "We need something. The Admins don't give two shits about us, and what went down yesterday with the stocks? That shit keeps up, them handing down punishments for us to carry out without any fucking explanation? It's gonna start a goddamn riot, and people are gonna get hurt thinking they're doing somethin' good."
"Amen to the face smashing." Jae muttered, shaking her head. "And yeah. I know. I've been thinking the same thing. Fuck." She sighed, and looked to him again. "So, maybe I put something up asking about authority. Something here. Maybe something elected. Just to...have something in place. Because yeah. Guess who's got a dead body here, and no one's come to do shit about it?" she asked rhetorically. "I dunno, Soldier. Seems things are going sideways even faster than I figured."
Brady sighed, shaking his head and lifting one hand from his coffee mug to drag it through his hair. “Yeah, seems like they are. Not real sure how trying to elect someone would go though. There’s a lot of fucking stubborn people here, me included,” he added with a faint smirk. “There’s a lot of mistrust, tempers running high, people who seem to thrive on chaos. Who would we even nominate for some kind of leadership position? Cal seems pretty level headed but he’s got his hands full with the clinic. And we can’t forget that when it comes down to it, we’re not in fucking control here. We can pretend all we like, try to keep some fucking semblance of order, but we’re not pulling the goddamn strings,” he finished with a softly frustrated growl.
"I don't know either, but it might be worth a shot. Then at least I could say I gave a shit, and tried." Jae said. "I agree that a lot of people here are chaotic at best. This whole situation is fucked. But who knows. If I suggest it and get shot down, I get shot down. I don't think we should put anyone 'in charge'. Though maybe a vote system would be good. I'm talking about people to call in when shit gets real, which it already has. I don't know. Might just be worth tossing it into the air and seeing what people think." Then she paused. "...of course, I could always post it anonymously."
As Jae explained her reasoning, Brady nodded along, thinking that she had some good points there. At that last bit, though, he paused and glanced at her with a quirked brow. “Anonymously?” he repeated, tone questioning. He’d seen that anonymous post the day before, but he’d figured it was some fucked up game the Admins were playing, trying to drum up more chaos and fear.
"Yeah, you saw someone tossed something up without a name attached." Jae said. "I know just the girl to ask." She added with a little wink. "Might ask about a few other things, too, but we'll see. But you don't think the idea's entirely fucking stupid?" she asked.
He nodded at the statement, agreeing that he had seen it. “Do you? Who?” he asked, figuring that if they were going to do this whole having each other’s backs thing, then they should share and share alike. “No, I don’t think it’s stupid. Can’t really see it panning out, but I think we gotta fucking try to get something going.”
"Blondie." Jae said. "Pretty sure she's the hacker." She gestured down to the courtyard. "She was down there. The one saying the stocks were the cause of this." she added. "And alright, Soldier. I'll jump, then. We can see what happens from there, I suppose."
Glancing down to where Jae gestured, Brady studied Mazie for a moment. “Ah, yeah, that’s Mazie. She clocked me the other day. She’s fucking fearless,” he recalled, and there was just a small note of pride in the woman that he wasn’t likely to admit to. “Sounds good. Should be interesting to see how people react to the idea, if nothing else,” he said with a shrug.
Jae grinned at that, arching a brow at him. "Yeah? Well, go her, then." she said, knowing Brady could take it. "And yeah, I guess so." she said. Then she stood straight again. "So, what next, Soldier?" she asked him.
“Yeah, she had good reason, though,” Brady said with a shrug. He had no hard feelings toward the blonde, though he figured she wasn’t going to like him anytime soon. “What next? I dunno, maybe try to work out what to post if we figure out how to post anonymously. And maybe in the meantime you could fill me in on anyone you’ve met and got a feel for?” he suggested.
Jae shrugged. "Sure." she said. "Met Reece, who...comes off like a total psycho to me, so there's that." she offered first. He'd offered up the whole cannibal of it all, so it was only fair to reciprocate with the biggest 'dude wtf' she'd had induced.
“How so?” Brady asked, because he hadn’t got that vibe off the guy in his admittedly limited interaction with Reece.
"Was talking to him about his past, and he tossed in there 'negligent homicide' like it was nothing. Mentioned it was apparently buddies of his? And like...nothing. No twitches of anything, it all came off like he was just shrugging it off. That and he said he couldn't remember why he'd opted to go in for armed robbery, which, if I pulled a job that got people, especially people I cared about, killed? I'd sure as fuck remember. He said it was only five years ago, too, so he doesn't even have the excuse of 'I was a dumb kid and who knows what I was thinking'." Jae said.
Brady listened, taking in what Jae was saying and trying to decide if he'd have taken 'total psycho' away from that. Maybe not total, but the way Jae was saying it, he'd probably have wondered about the guy. "Can't say I'd fucking forget what got me into it, either. Guess we keep an eye on him." And he thought he'd make it a point to have an actual conversation with the guy, try to reach his own conclusions and maybe see if he could figure more out about him. They couldn't be complacent here, and it was important that they figure out as much as they could about the people they were incarcerated with.
"That's my plan." Jae told him. "Jason seems like good people. Protective type, and he can handle himself. Haven't really met the tattooed guy who helped in the fight yesterday. Everyone else I've met seems to be non-threats. Well, except for British Guy, who just seems like an asshat."
"Yeah, that fucker couldn't shut up for five fucking seconds to realize that we weren't talkin' about torturing anyone," Brady agreed with a shake of his head. "But yeah, didn't really get anything bad off Jason." He wanted to have another conversation with the guy now that he wasn't trying to figure out where the fuck he was or what was going on. "Seems like there's a lot of non-threats here, or at least people who are only threats in extenuatings," he said with a shrug.
"I like those odds better than seeing a bunch of people I feel the need to keep in view at all times. But it makes me worry a little for the sheep." Jae said. Drawing in a deep breath, she let it out slowly. "I am bringing myself down." she noted. "I'm usually a little more chipper than this. Goddamn corpses, raining on my parade." she looked up at the dark skies with accusation in her eyes.
Brady nodded in agreement at that. "Yeah, the sheep and the bleeding hearts." He worried that Autumn would befriend the wrong person with her generally open and friendly nature, and he'd be damned if anyone was gonna hurt her. He let out a sigh at that thought. What the hell was it with these women, wiggling their way in and bringing out his protective instincts? "Don't really see a lot to be chipper about in this place," he said with a shrug.
"Yeah, but it's that, or get dragged the fuck down into a teeming pit of black tar despair." Jae told him. Which she didn't want to do. She knew it was there, in herself. That she habitually kept herself on a more sarcastic, if chipper edge, but that didn't mean she didn't feel everything else, lurking right down deep in her mind where she'd buried it the first time. She turned on a smile then. "Nevermind." she told him. "Moving on."
Being no stranger to the teeming pit of black tar despair, Brady just shrugged, choosing not to comment on it. He'd dipped down into that pit yesterday, but he was doing better today, having other things to focus on. It was only a matter of time before he was immersed in it again, though. "Moving on," he agreed, though to what, he wasn't sure.
Jae was at once relieved, and disappointed that he let it go. She'd asked him a lot about himself, learned a whole lot, but he knew next to nothing about her. And, he didn't seem to want to, either. You're not going to find it. she told herself, showing none of that in her outward demeanor. "Think I'm going to go for a walk." she told him. "Maybe see if I can scare up Blondie."
Brady nodded shortly at that. "You do that," he said. He wasn't sure what he was going to do now. Maybe he'd see if the good doctor needed a hand with anything, or maybe he'd just go back to his room. "Let me know what you find out from her?" he asked. There was no way in hell he was going to try to tag along for that, figuring Mazie wouldn't be willing to share whatever she'd figured out with him.
"No problem, Soldier." Jae said, heading off. "Keep an eye out." she added, knowing he would anyhow. Be alert, all the time, that was the name of the game. And in here? It seemed like that was even more relevant.
