Drinking Games
Characters: Jun-he and Mazie
Setting: Jun-he’s room
Time: Evening
Though Jun-he had spent the better part of the day just wandering and really getting a look at the buildings, his run in with Kasper had really irked his mood. He had decided that half a bottle of Soju between two people would not be enough, at least not tonight for him. What he wanted to do was just let himself out of his mental cage and be himself for a while. Rather, be who he really was before everything happened that landed him exactly where he was.
After collecting a hand full of beer cans and a second shot glass from the communal bar, Jun-he headed back to his room. He placed the cans and glass next to the green bottle at his desk and turned to the dresser provided. If he was going to do anything else tonight, he definitely had to replace that shirt taken from him.
Shuffling through the folded clothing, he seemed to have a real problem with anything white. It was likely the annoyance left in the back of his mind that doubted the girl’s abilities to get that coffee out of his white tank top. “Bullshit...” he whispered to himself at the thought, as he pulled out his grey state penitentiary t shirt given to him during the transfer. The satire of the shirt never got old for him.
Mazie had headed back to her room after her lesson with Reggie and the car and committed the rest of her time to working on memorizing the Korean lettering Jun-he had written for her. She'd given up the search for index cards and ended up just taking a few pages out of the back of her lined notebook from Jun-he then committing a good half an hour to developing some makeshift index cards.
After that, she took her time writing the few characters onto her index cards, writing their english equivalent on the backside. She even did her best to write the greeting she'd learned down and wrote 'hello' on the back of it. When she figured she'd done as much as she could, she grabbed her notebook, index cards, and room key and headed down to Jun-he's room, knocking on the door. "Annyeonghaseyo," She called from outside the door, though it still didn't sound as nice as when Jun-he said it, same with poorly her writing was compared to his.
Taken by only a little bit of surprise, Jun-he looked over at his door. Smiling wide, he recognized the voice and hurriedly threw his shirt over his head. With one arm through, he trotted over to the door and opened it while sticking the other one in and pulling the shirt down. “Ahh, annyeong,” he greeted back, finding his mood much more elevated now that his mind was completely over the incident by the courtyard and he was focused on the blonde girl at his door.
Giving her an inviting smile, Jun-he moved away from the open door. “Eoseo osyeoyo,” he added cheerfully, walking to the desk and picking up the bottle, “it means.. welcome. Or come in.” He took off the cap immediately. “Ready to try Soju, Maessi?” he asked, making a point to pronounce her name as Korean as he knew how. It had been rather amusing in a way to teach her his language, and he seemed to find some sense of complacency in their gathering.
It was an easy reciprocation, the smile she gave back to him when he opened the door. The shirt he wore had her laughing, though, because the fact that it somehow ended up in the seven outfits they'd given each one of them was pretty funny.
Then he turned and headed further into the room, saying something that had Mazie struggling to understand him until he explained. And when she did understand, all she could think of was how complicated that word was. "Ok," She ended up saying, heading inside after him then shutting the door. “How do you say it again?”
The difference in her name had her smiling back at him though. "Sure, hit me," She said, heading over to his desk to put her notebook down before she came closer to him and held her hand out for the shot glass.
Jun-he laughed. There was no doubt in his mind that the word he gave her would be way too difficult for her. It was a shame though, it was such a basic greeting. “Eo. Seo. Osyeo. Yo,” he repeated, separating each syllable as he poured out the Soju in two shot glasses. “It is hard for now, but you’ll learn it better.”
After pouring two healthy shots, he picked them up and offered her the fresh glass he had acquired. “For now, you learn how to drink soju,” he said with an enormous grin before pouring his shot in his mouth and swallowing. He made a strange drawn out k sound and then smiled through his teeth. “Not so difficult.”
Mazie repeated the word again, "Eo. Sea. Oseyo. Yo. Eoseo oseyeoyo." She tried again, not as close to Jun-he's pronunciation as she would have liked to be but she'd practice it and get better with time. "Practice makes perfect, right?"
Taking the shot, she lifted it up in a cheers to him then shot it back, her face scrunched as she swallowed the shot then let out a gush of air at the end. After a moment of regaining her composure, she grinned and handed him the glass back. "Let's keep going," She said, smiling again. "So guessing you don't do chasers with soju?"
Now she was his kind of girl. Without hesitating he poured them both another shot, rather pleased that she had taken to his offer of drinking. Really drinking.
“Chase....?” Jun-he thought about it for a moment. He never really heard the term used during his time in America, but he had heard it in the past. “Maybe.... Beer?” Placing the bottle down, he grabbed an unopened can of beer and offered it to her before wasting no time and gulping down his shot.
Damn. She was already concerned she wouldn't be able to keep up with Jun-he. "Chasing with beer, huh? Pretty badass if I say so myself." She was going to have to go slower maybe since the only real drinking Mazie did was to grab bottles of whiskey from her parents and work on drinking it slowly over an extended night hacking.
But what the hell, right? She'd know when she needed to stop. She took the second shot he poured, made the same scrunched up face, and then popped open her beer to take a sip. "So this is your favorite drink, soju? Does it translate to something in English?"
“I don’t know,” Jun-he answered truthfully, grabbing a beer of his own, “But I don’t think so. It is similar like Japanese Sake but different make.” If there was a translation for Soju in English, he imagined it wasn’t anything relevant.
Taking a healthy sip of his own beer, Jun-he thought about the first question. Initially he had searched for the drink just to revisit his own memories of Korea. It made him feel a little homesick, but comforted him all the same. “Soju is something in Korea that is very common, like a familiarity, so I like it here especially.” He was definitely unsure of how much of that made sense, but he hoped his message was clear enough to understand.
Eyeing the book she had brought, Jun-he slid it over closer in front of him. “You want to learn something tonight?”
Mazie listened, nodding as he explained. "Yeah, Whiskey does that for me. Makes me a little homesick. It's easier for me to get, I guess, though. You should ask The Man to give you some more soju, your favorite brand. They probably would. I'd ask for you but somehow I don't think we're seeing eye to eye right now."
Heading over to the desk, Mazie leaned on it and sipped again at her beer. She glanced at his computer and wondered if he'd read or understood the post-it note she'd given him earlier that day. She'd have to bring it up here, but later. "If you want to teach, I want to learn, simple as that. I made some flash cards, have you used those before?"
“As a child,” Jun-he replied, “Of course. It’s been a very long time since school for me. I never finished with it.” His admission was simply more conversation than anything else.
He watched her steal a glance at his computer and then answer his question. Nodding, he picked up the bottle of soju and both shot glasses with his fingers. Juggling that and the beer in his other hand, he moved to his bed placed them all down on the dresser next to it. “Ok,” he began, climbing onto his bed and sitting cross legged upon it, “Let’s see them.” Jun-he pat the spot next to him on the bed, inviting her to join him as he leaned over and poured two more shots. Though he wasn’t quite sure if she was ready for more Soju yet. They were going to run out quick if he kept up the pace... Of course, he reminded himself that that was exactly why he brought the beer.
