Following Advice
Characters: Charlie and OPEN
Setting: Morning, under the trees in the courtyard

Charlie's head was swimming Of course, that had a whole lot to do with the fact that he'd drunk half a bottle of whiskey for breakfast in a very short amount of time. But he'd successfully found his room. He'd left some less-than-legible comments on the journals, and then he'd headed out. The day was a nice one and he'd settled himself down where he'd told Autumn he would: under the trees in the courtyard, one hand under his head, his eyes half closed as he waited to see if the world would stop spinning.

Brady wanted coffee. He really wanted some fucking coffee after the bullshit on the computer this morning. He was being punished? Seriously, what kind of stupid, fucked up shit was that? It didn't matter that he really had planned on cutting the grass anyway because it would be something to do that would eat up a good bit of time that he wouldn't have to otherwise fill, he just didn't fucking thing he should be punished from what had happened in the pool. It had been a goddamn reflex, and he'd stopped it, damn it.

But he'd still done it.

He needed to be more in control of himself, needed to be able to stop it from happening in the first place, and so he'd take his licks, whether they were deserved or not. They probably were deserved. Fuck. He was a goddamn fuck up, and he knew it, and obviously the Administration had figured it out, too. Why else would they be punishing him?

And so Brady grumbled all the way from his room to the tool shed, which really wasn't very far at all. He'd get this shit done, then reward himself with that fucking cup of coffee he really wanted. He got the mower out, checking to make sure it had juice before getting started. It was already a little warm, but he ignored it, just focusing on pushing the mower over the grass. Only not too far into the mowing, he found his head blocked by some shmuck who seemed half passed out under a tree. "You gonna move out of my fucking way so I can finish this shit sometime today?" he asked, his annoyance sapping what little politeness he might have issued otherwise.

Charlie opened his eyes - he hadn't been asleep, just relaxing and letting the sound of the breeze through the trees, the dappled sunlight across his face, and the whiskey in his veins take all his cares away. He'd heard the noise of the mower, but hadn't managed to connect the two. Logic and reasoning weren't his strong points when he was drunk. "Shouldn't you ask nicely?" he said, bringing a hand up to shade his eyes. This guy was rude.

Brady snorted, shaking his head. "Not before I've had my fucking coffee. Get out of my way." He waited a couple beats before adding, "Please." He wasn't intentionally being rude, he just wasn't trying to be nice. He was just being himself. And, well, himself wasn't very nice. If this guy didn't like it, then too the fuck bad. He could go somewhere else.

Charlie paused for a moment, then rolled out of the way and unsteadily got to his feet. He wavered for a moment, then managed to stay upright - at least, for long enough to make it to the nearest tree, where he leaned back against the trunk and studied the other man. "Is cutting the grass really that urgent?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

Eying the guy as he stood and wavered, Brady let out a short laugh. "What? Did you hit the fucking bar already?" He knew the signs, and if this guy was anything like him, time of day didn't really have much bearing on drinking. "I sinned, this is my goddamn punishment. Getting this shit out of the way early," he answered simply, pushing the mower over the space of grass the guy had just vacated.

"Sinned - God speak to you, did he?" Charlie laughed, clearly amused at his own humour, rather than laughing at the other man. "And - whoever designed this place fucked up. When the first thing you see is a bar. Who the hell thought that was a good idea?" He shook his head. As far as CHarlie was concerned, that was a serious design flaw. You put people into an unfamiliar place. They're under stress. Hell, from what he'd been told, people had been in prison - actually like-on-the-TV prison. And the first thing you show them was a bar. He was surprised people made it any further.

"God? Hardly," Brady said, snorting out a humorless laugh. "Just whoever the hell runs this place." And they had the control, so he would go with it for the time being. Wasn't like he had anything left to lose at this point. "No shit," he agreed with a small bark of laughter. "You just get here?" Cause he'd had a similar reaction to the bar, right along with drinking himself into a stupor, so he could cut the guy a little slack, mentally anyway.

"Yeah, just this morning. 'New fish' apparently. Though, generally I prefer 'Charlie'. I'll answer to pretty much anything though." He paused and amended, "As long as it's not offensive. Then I'd have to tell you not to call me that again. So, what'd'ya do to be lumbered with cutting the grass. Can't have been much. It's not even a slap on the wrist."

Brady filed the name away, nodding slightly. "Charlie, then. I'm not gonna come up with some stupid nickname for people. I'm Brady," he offered. He laughed at the question, agreeing completely that it was a pretty stupid fucking punishment. "Some girl violated the personal space bubble, and I pinned her to the wall. Didn't fucking know I was doing it right away, but soon as I did, I let her go and apologized. And apparently cause I posted a note about it warning people not to fucking touch me, my punishment got reduced to this bullshit," he explained, his frustration with the whole situation clear in his tone and the tense line of his back as he pushed the mower.

Charlie frowned a little at the explanation. He didn't approve of hitting women. Under any circumstances. "What - you couldn't just have asked the girl to back off in the first place?" he asked, though his tone was even and non-confrontational.

Brady paused in the mowing to give the guy a long, hard look. "What the fuck don't you understand about 'I didn't know what I was doing right away'? It was an automatic fucking reflex when she touched me, and as soon as I fucking realized what was going on, I stopped it. You think I wanted to hurt her? No, I didn't." And it was really fucking stupid that he was getting shit about it from someone else who apparently had no fucking clue what they were talking about.

Charlie made a mental note to never get anywhere near this guy, given that he didn't seem to even have enough of a reflex action to stop himself from pinning a woman to the wall. That was... worrying. He held up his hands level with his chin in the universal gesture of supplication. "No worries - sure you were just in the moment," he suggested.

The guy seemed to look a little unsettled or something, which was just fine for Brady. Better than him thinking he needed to whip it out and prove he was big and tough or some shit like that. He'd had enough of that shit in prison, even had a few more scars because of it. He survived though, because when it came down to it, he was a lot more fucked in the head and dangerous than those idiots. "Yeah, I was," he said simply before turning his attention back to the mowing. It wasn't entirely true - he hadn't been in the moment at all, which was what the problem had been, but it wasn't worth trying to make the guy understand.

Charlie stayed leaning back against the tree, watching the guy carefully. That took a whole lot more concentration when you were wasted, that was for sure. He waited until Brady came near again before speaking. "So, what's this place like?" he asked.

Brady was surprised when the guy spoke to him again, and he paused to look over at him. "Like something out of a fucking Twilight Zone episode. It makes no goddamn sense. Personally, I think it's just a fucking psych experiment. Throw a bunch of convicts into a co-ed closed community and see what happens. No contact with the outside world, no guards, none of all that shit. Yeah, I think they're just fucking with us. Rats in a goddamn maze." Paranoid? Probably.

Charlie snorted. "Yeah, I can believe that. Sounds like they're setting us up for shit. No contact? And they've already got you doing punishment duty even though there's nobody standing over you enforcing it? Why's that then - what are they gonna do to you if you don't do this one?" Anything, his mind supplied. But nobody would know if the system wasn't tested.

Brady shrugged. "No contact far as I've seen," he elaborated, but he could be wrong. He had to snort a laugh and shake his head at the questions. "No clue. And even though I think it's kind of bullshit, I did do what they're 'punishing' me for, and I'm not gonna bitch about facing the consequences of my actions. That and, well, the grass needs cut. It's keeping me busy and away from the bar."

Brady laughed, a low, humorless sound at that. "You're a fucking idiot," he said, though not quite seriously enough to be the insult the words implied. "Yeah, the bar's great, except when drinking makes you less in control of your reactions to people and there are women around who don't fucking get that some people are beyond saving."

Something clicked in Charlie's fuzzy mind. "Oh - so you were drunk when you went for her?" he asked, just about retaining enough presence of mind to not use the word 'attacked', though it was a close run thing. "Yeah - stay sober. At least I'm a happy drunk. I just want to lie on the grass and watch the clouds go by. But apparently, I'd be in your way!"

"Yeah, I was," Brady answered shortly, not caring about the wording at this point. No, he just wanted to finish the stupid mowing and then figure out what the hell he was going to fill the rest of his day with. Maybe he'd check out the mini farm or whatever they had going in the new block. He didn't know shit about farming, but it could keep him busy, right? "Yeah, trying there. But you do what I've done, see what I've seen, and you wouldn't be a happy fucking drunk either."

"And now you drink - or avoid drinking. And you're stuck here talking to me while I'm totally gone. Sorry, that's gotta suck," Charlie told him, shaking his head. "No wonder you think I'm a fucking idiot. Which I'm not, by the way."

Brady shrugged. "Just life now." He could roll with it. And he could hope that whoever else had fucked up didn't confess and they took the alcohol away. It was really fucking hard not to just go back into the cafeteria and get a drink. "Wasn't a blanket statement. Just meant you were an idiot about the bar being awesome in a community full of convicts. It's pretty fucking stupid to give a group of convicts a bar."

Charlie laughed at that. "Yeah - I can go with that one. Fucking stupid. Especially where it is. I mean, I can go with the bar being awesome right now because when I walked into this place, thing I needed most was a drink and hell, the world's a better place right now. But... Lots of people. Probably with violent histories? Bad idea, man. Bad. Idea."

"Exactly," Brady said simply. Hell, he could remember just how good that first drink had felt two days ago. "So hopefully the violent drunk will manage to stay strong and stay away from the booze," he said with dark humor.

Brady laughed at that, a real honest-to-god laugh. "You could try. Can't guarantee you wouldn't get hurt. I don't get off on hurting people though. Honestly, it fucks with me when I do. And most of the time it's just when someone touches me when I'm unaware or sneaks up on me, drunk or not, that I snap. And most of the time, I can bring myself back before doing real damage."

"Noted. Won't take it personally then," Charlie said. He wondered if he'd get through this without Brady injuring him in some way. If they were talking about instinctive reactions, stepping into the path of violence towards women tended to be his. From what he could figure right now, that meant that sooner or later, they may well come to blows, even if unintentionally.

"Just hope it doesn't come to it, man. That's why I put something up on the journals about it. I don't want to hurt anyone," Brady repeated, hoping that the point was getting across to the guy. That was why he'd plead guilty to all his charges. Other than the things he'd done during deployment and in prison, he was not proud of any of the times he'd hurt someone, and that cop's death, the things he'd done to Brenna over the years weighed heavily on him.

"Here's to hoping," Charlie agreed, closing his eyes and leaning his head back against the tree. He wanted to lie down again. His head was starting to swim, and lying down helped with that. He was obtaining an awareness that he really had drunk far too much. But, he couldn't lie down here, not while this guy was likely to try and run a mower over his head. "I - am gonna go back to my room. Lie down," he told Brady. That seemed safest, at least.

Brady just nodded. He didn't particularly want the people here to think the worst of him, but he knew that he wasn't a good person, and he'd been honest when he said he didn't want to hurt anyone, so it was important that he be honest. And if it made people less inclined to start shit with him, then all the better. He'd had enough of that at Leavenworth. "You do that," he said simply, turning away from Charlie to get back to mowing.
