hello
Characters: Naomi and Wes
Setting: courtyard
Naomi had glanced around on the journals and the like, and decided that she wanted to try and meet new people as often as she could. So, when she spotted a man she didn't know in the courtyard, she walked over in his direction. She smiled. "Hi," she greeted. "I'm still new here, so this is my effort to not stay a stranger. I'm Naomi. You are?"
Wes had been making his way to the gym for a workout when the woman seemed to appear out of nowhere. He really wasn’t proud of the way he flinched, but he couldn’t help it. Women made him nervous. Especially strange women who he hadn’t met before. It took him a fraction of a second, but he gathered himself quickly enough and flashed her a friendly smile, though his posture remained guarded and he kept firmly in his own personal space. He wouldn’t be unfriendly, but he couldn’t be encouraging. “I’m Wes - also new here,” he told her.
Naomi didn't miss the flinch, and as a result, she took a step back, though it looked more like she merely shifted her weight. It wasn't the first time she'd done something like it, to put people at ease, and it was an automatic accommodation. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you," she said. "Nice to meet you, Wes, did you want me to let you get on with it?" she asked, glancing in the direction of the gym, which she hadn't actually checked out much yet.
It couldn't be said that Wes noticed the way she eased back, but he did react to it, relaxing slightly and loosening up. "No, it's fine. Just headed to the gym to work out for a while," he offered up.
She wasn't sure she should continue things, though did note that his body language was less tight after she wasn't so close. So, in case he was sincere, she continued speaking, though she was very closely monitoring him in her unobtrusive way, just so she would be able to pick up when to leave. "I'm attempting to settle in, though it's...well, less easy than one might think, I suppose. How are you handling things?"
"This place seems okay, though I get the feeling that we came in at a bad time - with moving everyone round and all. That seems to have been very disruptive for all concerned," Wes commented. He was trying to just roll with everything that was going on, plus he was less attached to it all than some here were.
"I agree, people seem on edge." Naomi said. "Then again, people seemed on edge my first day too, just over the journals. I got messages about 'Them'." she said. "Seems to kind of be a weird environment to start with. I'm glad you seem to be doing okay, though."
"How are you doing? Handling things?" Wes asked, turning that back round on her, rather than allowing the conversation to stay focused on how he was doing specifically. That seemed odd to him, for someone to immediately be focused on someone they'd not met before that way.
"The jury's still out on that," Naomi admitted. "So far I'm just trying to get to know the people here, since we'll be spending a lot of time together, in theory." she said. And so far, it isn't going super well. she internally admitted. "But, anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself. I really didn't mean to disrupt your day."
"That's okay," Wes assured her, knowing how to be perfectly pleasant to people. Once upon a time he had even been charming, but his arrest and conviction had changed him. He was cautious now, where once he had been carefree. "Seems like a good plan - getting to know people. I'm trying to do the same."
"Have you met many people yet?" she asked, still not entirely positive she shouldn't duck back out of the conversation, but now that he was continuing talking she stayed.
Wes ducked his head slightly and chuckled. "Probably not as many as I should have," he admitted. "But it seems rude to, say, go knocking on doors, right?" he joked, inwardly proud of himself for actually managing that much. He knew that if he was going to live co-ed, then he needed to be able to function with women. Especially those who gave him no reason to think that there was anything untoward going on.
Naomi smiled and wrinkled her nose. "To be honest, I considered that, but...I don't know who I'm sharing space with, so recognized that as a dumb idea before it made it to execution." she admitted. "So, I'm glad there you were, right out in the open." she continued. "I haven't met many either, honestly. I think people spend a lot of time in their rooms."
"Either that or, with some of the messages that have been going around, there are people who don't actually have clothes to go out in," Wes pointed out, though not entirely seriously. "Of course, there's also the issue that apparently we're cut off from half the people here, which means there're, what? A max of fourteen of us here anyway? That we can actually meet? That's not a whole lot of people, even if this is a relatively small space. Of course, with that small a number of people, there's no reason why we shouldn't have some kind of get together. Maybe dinner, or... I wonder if there are supplies for a cook out here? Could be good. I think the speakers in the gym could be arranged to play out here, and if we had a couple of people cooking the meat, it'd at least give people a reason to come out of their rooms, without the pressure to talk to people that a formal sitdown meal would have," Wes suggested, thinking that through.
“There are supplies to cook, I’ve been to the kitchen. It looks like there’s more than enough to put together some kind of event or the like. I think it’s a good idea, especially with the recent shake ups for everyone else. So, even if there isn’t a grill or something, it could be done, regardless. Setting that up seems like it would be easy, did you want to do that, should we both, or would you like me to put up an announcement? Perhaps for tomorrow?” she suggested.
"Why don't you put up the announcement and I'll support you," Wes suggested. She seemed like the more openly social one, afterall.
Naomi smiled. "Sure," she told him. "Thank you. I'll get on that right away." she said. "Any requests for the dinner? A side, or something you like?" she asked, figuring she'd make something if he had anything specific in mind. It was better than trying to blindly guess what people may enjoy.
Wes shook his head. “Not for me - as long as there’s plenty of meat. I can handle that side of things, but I wouldn’t trust me with anything more complicated than burning meat,” he quipped.
"Well okay then." Naomi said. "Sounds good. I'll let you get back to it, and get on announcing that. Have a nice day, it was good meeting you." she told him with a light wave, before she turned to head off.
