THE HYENAS
"A robber of grave-worms. One who supplies the young physicians with that with which the old physicians have supplied the undertaker. The hyena."
The fact that hyenas share many genetic characteristics with felines, yet exhibit canine behaviour, is perhaps a telling point when it comes to these creatures. They suffer from a poor reputation in both the Shifter community and the media, often depicted as scavengers with no decency or moral values. Many cultures believe the hyena can influence a person's spirit, that they rob graves, and steal livestock and children. To be fair, that isn't too off the mark. There is certainly a larger than average proportion of Shifter hyenas in prison than any other species. With the exception of the highly social Spotted Hyena, hyena Shifters in general are not gregarious animals and will generally stick to their own kind. It's very rare, for example, that a hyena Shifter will mate and produce offspring with a human partner. As a result many of the strains suffer from inbreeding, thus contributing to their poor reputation in the Shifter world.
Hyena shifters live in Clans and it is the social aspects of these groups which set this species apart from the others, as the female members dominate the male. The dominant female is known as the Matriarch. High-ranking members maintain their position through aggression directed against lower-ranking clan members. The hierarchy is also nepotistic; the offspring of dominant females automatically outrank adult females subordinate to their mother. In the wild the Clan's social life revolves around a communal den and this has carried over to their Shifter counterparts, who are known for setting up 'family businesses' or identifying one house as their primary meeting point. Ask a hyena where they came from and you'll get a different answer every time.

When Darkness Falls is an original character role-playing game set in the iconic city of New Orleans, Louisiana. The story began (November 2012) when supernatural beings were still hidden from the public, living alongside unsuspecting humans who were never the wiser. Werewolves, vampires, shape-shifters, and gifted humans struggled to keep their secrets, while still maintaining relatively "normal" lives. Now, however, the winds of change are blowing and something big is coming to the supernatural world.
A group of humans, bent on exposing the supernaturals for what they are, have began cropping up in cities across the globe, including New Orleans. Slowly other humans are becoming more receptive to their insistence that there are evil things lurking right in their own back yards. The supernatural community is nervous, unsure of how to stop a threat unlike anything they have ever seen before.
The biggest change of all is coming in the months ahead, and it will alter both the human and supernatural worlds forever. There will be no going back, and no one is sure of how the future will be going forward. Will you be here for the revelation?

In mid-2008, the picturesque state of Washington was turned upside-down when a nuclear reactor suddenly began to overheat and meltdown. All neighboring residences were immediately evacuated while officials began repair the and cleanup. Unfortunately, in the process of stabilizing the power plant, it became clear that unknown levels of radiation had been leaking into the atmosphere for at least several months before the plant was deemed to be a danger. Hundreds of people were adversely affected by radiation poisoning. These people were offered refuge on an island off the coast, Destruction Island. Here, a seemingly typical suburban neighborhood was established in place of a former wildlife preserve, in the hopes of offering its new residents some sense of normalcy. The cornerstone of Destruction was a special facility, where 'victims' of the radiation contamination could receive medical treatment, psychological counseling, education and various types of training to assist in adjusting to their new lives. The residents were encouraged to go on about their lives, establish social, academic and occupational connections and to make the best of a bad situation.
However, all was not well on the Island. While the public was told one story, the residents of Destruction experienced a very different reality. Their every movement was monitored: cameras recorded resident movement at every turn, armed military guards patrolled the island to "keep the peace." Communication with those outside the island was greatly restricted, emails and phone calls monitored and often blocked completely. Those residents with radiation side-effects were not allowed to leave the island once they had been quarantined there. It was rumored that even resident homes were bugged. Throughout the community, tensions ran rampant between residents and so-called officials. Violence between guards and residents became commonplace and soon there were more reported deaths from violence than from the effects of the radiation. Eventually, any resident could be taken into custody if they were deemed a ‘threat.’ Freedom was now a relative term and several residents began to join together in secrecy to stage a revolt.
In late 2013, the uprising took action. Known as The Faction, the group began to make their presence known: first in the form of peaceful protests against the government. When these quiet acts of defiance were met with continued restrictions, threats and violence, The Faction pressed forward, the number of members growing quickly. Even some government officials and military personnel were rumored to be secretly supporting the revolution. Still, the government would not back off so easily and began to plant spies among the residents and even within the Faction itself in order to calm the impending storm. Just as it seemed a full fledged war was about to erupt, the Faction's leader was publicly attacked, beaten and taken into custody by the military. For now, it seems as though the turmoil has calmed. The government has resumed control of the Island and its residents, military-resident violence has decreased and order restored. But the Faction is far from gone, and they do not intend to stay silent for long.
Destruction Island is a modern-day, genetic-mutation based PSL set on an island off the coast of Washington state. All characters are human, with or without genetic mutation. In addition to coping with the existence of genetic mutation in themselves and/or friends and family members, residents of Destruction Island must also learn to live in a dystopian society closely monitored and controlled by the government. Some may choose focus on finding some sense of normalcy, others may be bitter and angry at the lack of government response to their poisoning, still others may play an integral role in the continued revolution effort. All types of characters are encouraged: government officials, military forces, revolutionaries, and common citizens.
