I was wondering if anyone knew how this family tree was made? I would like to use it for a game as a parents list if possible.

welcome. Adjust it as needed I guess?

A) I was going to let Fin handle it, but I'm a little offended that someone would just lift the source code from the page so I needed to say something. Asking for a table like an example or even asking that maker is fine by polite standards, but sometimes we make tables for ourselves that we don't want to share with the broader community. [info]kickawesome is actually pretty great at sharing a lot of her codework, but this really is sort of offensive.

B) Just using the source code from the page doesn't always help, because it includes some of IJ/LJ/Scribbld's code - like the ljuser and such, it lifts ALL of it, not just the table included.

I'm sorry? I could rewrite it if you wish. Didn't mean to offend anyone...was just trying to help.

Deleted the comment since it doesn't follow standards.

I think I get where you and [info]splott are both coming from but I might be incorrect. Hopefully, the comments below will help sort things out so there are no misunderstandings in the future!

Perhaps next time if you do this just make sure to make it clear that they shouldn't be using the code without the original poster's permission.

Just to put in my two cents: I very much agree with you about lifting source code being a rather disrespectful thing to do. However, I'm not sure if this was [info]bri's intention (although I could be mistaken). I took the question to mean the original poster was wondering how to create something like it herself as she asked whether anyone knew how it was made and [info]bri told her to adjust it as needed.

That's why below I told the original poster to make sure she wasn't stealing someone's code. Besides that, source code is pretty easy to get as is and doesn't always translate well into a layout. However, it does show how things were set up structurally. And I think it's fine to use it for that reason.

But I suppose what I'm saying is: I'd personally find it weird if that was [info]bri's intention as she's very good about making it clear stealing graphics and all is not cool over on her community [info]graphix, but at the same time I'm glad that you've said that in case it was her intention or other members look at this post and get the impression acceptable to just snag code.

And... yeah. Mainly this whole note by me is just for anyone else who might stumble across this entry and go "I'M CONFUSED".

Also, I might be being lenient about the idea of how much is stealing? But I personally think if people are just using the base codes and then re-design whatever it is there's a point where they've basically made it their own.

I've always found it weird when even though I personally don't require credit, I've seen a number of people credit me anyhow even when their finished product looks nothing like the original. So much so that I've told them they should post their layout to the community before being told "...but you made it?"

So, yeah. I really don't know what either member's intention was so I found it rude to accuse them of anything before knowing exactly what their intentions were. Thus my comment below. Hopefully that clears up things and you don't feel like I'm going "Oh, yeah, it's cool to post other people's code here with the intention of stealing it."

Either way, I ultimately feel the responsibility of doing the right thing falls on the original poster's shoulders. They're the one using the code and if [info]wastintime came along and saw her code being stolen because of this post, the blame would fall on the original poster - especially since I feel I've made it clear that they need to make sure they weren't stealing the code.

Either way, both posters have been pretty brilliant about it so... yeah. Huzzah for awesome members you only have to make a mention of things to once. SORRY IF THIS IS ALL OVER THE PLACE. I'M RUSHING TO GET TO WORK.

/TL;DR

Just as a head's up, make sure you're not stealing someone else's code. You could always leave them a comment asking if you can use it and they'd probably be happy to share it. If not, just ask someone if they'd mind making something like it.

That was actually made by [info]wastintime who's posted code to this community before. So, like I said: just ask.
