Hi there! I have a question regarding making icons in GIMP, in particular: what settings are actually good for making icons in GIMP? The ones I have of Toro y Moi in my icons are the first I've done outside of PS, and to me they look hideous in comparison to the other ones I've done. When I made icons in PS, I would do Overlay 50% -> Screen 50% (if it needed it) -> Scale -> Sharpen. For GIMP I do the same thing except with Unsharp Mask, though in all honesty I'm playing with it now and it seems like Sharpen might be a better option. I'm not sure yet. This doesn't change the fact that image scaling seems to decrease the quality (like with this one).

So I guess my question is: what are good settings for scaling, or at least some way of making cleaner icons like the ones I have of Willy and Nir in GIMP?

Actually, here's a better example of what I mean: unscaled, scaled. It's most pronounced on his ear.

I make all my icons in GIMP and I've figured out a pretty fast way to make decent looking icons (so long as the base images aren't very low quality.) Here's a tutorial for what I do. I hope this helps!

Thank you so much! Yeah, I'll have to try messing around with the alpha channels and being more selective with my sharpening.

No problem! I had the same issue with sharpening at first too, ngl. I find that just using the brush to selectively sharpen yields more satisfactory results. Making the switch to GIMP from PS (and vice versa) can be kind of unsettling when you're used to one thing, lmao.

Anyway, glad I could help!

This is:
Base: Sharpen +50
Layer 1: 50%, Gaussian Blur 6
Layer 2: 50%, Regular image Overlay
Layer 3: 50%, Regular image Screen

Do you think it looks too soft-focus-y?

I think that looks great, ngl! If you wanted to do some selective sharpening in key areas (wherever you prefer; I usually go for face, hair, and tattoos—stuff like that to draw the focus to the person) it wouldn't hurt, but you could also leave it as is and have a perfectly good icon or base. (Btw, that's lovely cropping!)

Or I just redid all my ones for Toro. I actually needed the brush after all, at least on these. Hee, mildly successful experiments.
