Harry Potter game ideas!
I have a million ideas and not enough time, so I make lists instead of all these ideas and hope that one day I will have half a moment to give it the attention it deserves. Alas, as I get older, I have come to realise that this is not the case. I will never have enough time. So here's a list of game concepts I'm releasing ~into the wild~. If you do use any of these, or if they inspire you, please let me know and link your final product! I'd love, love, love to see what you've done! These are some that my flist seem to like best from a longer list.
#1 EPISKEY INSPIRED BY: Scrubs. CONCEPT: Fresh-faced interns with great hopes and dreams start their first day at St. Mungo's. They've mastered OWLs, they survived NEWTs (and proudly wear t-shirts claiming so!), they've partied it up at summer music festivals featuring the likes of The Weird Sisters and they're ready. Oh, are they ready! Or maybe not? POTENTIAL IDEAS/TWISTS/GOALS: Healer Training is tough. There's a lot to learn and a lot at stake. Plot ideas for this kind of game can range from the comedic to the serious -- but if you're wanting inspiration? Glance at a few episode descriptions from medical/hospital tv shows on Wikipedia! Notables include: hostage situations, breakouts of STDs, competitions between interns for the chance to work with notable Healers or on notable patients, competitions in general! #2 LA VIE BOHEME INSPIRED BY: N/A. CONCEPT: Because I love the idea of there being a Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts, a game centered on the students who attend it (for a three year duration where they recieve a Bachelor of Performing Arts. And are required to have completed at least 5 OWLs). Ages ranging from 16 to 100+. Places are, however, limited. And a concentration of drama queens typically results in some kind of hilarity! POTENTIAL IDEAS/TWISTS/GOALS: Since it's the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts, I imagine there's always a play in the works somewhere. It would be cool if, in game, a play was pulled just before it was ready to perform for any number of reasons (feel free to be dramatic!). It would be really interesting in terms of playing out the fall out if a realistic amount of build up was also put towards it. These sorts of things work best when the characters care deeply about them, since they'll then have all the feelings to deal with afterwards. #3 BUCKBEAK, IN THE CONSERVATORY, WITH A REVOLVER INSPIRED BY: Clue(do). CONCEPT: Cluedo-style Murder Mystery games abound! The killer is either a cast-character or an NPC and clues are released over the course of the game, leaving the players and their characters to solve the mystery. To keep the game exciting, I suggest only the mod(s) know the real answer. POTENTIAL IDEAS/TWISTS/GOALS: A second-death in game! Throw lots of red-herrings into this, because you don't want it to be too obvious, or it will take away the suspense. This won't be the easiest of games to run, but I bet it would be a hell of a lot of fun to play out. #4 GHOST BUSTERS! INSPIRED BY: N/A. CONCEPT: Did you know there's a Spirit Division in the Ministry of Magic's Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures? They deal with complaints about "has-beens" haunting people to the point of formally complaining. POTENTIAL IDEAS/TWISTS/GOALS: A close relative of one of the characters is a ghost? The head of the office is a ghost (har har har, irony~~)? You're a ghost? There's a Ghost Relations Officer, who speaks to the, erm, ~dead~? Aside from the usual workplace antics, there's lots of room for laughs with this idea. #6 CENTAUR LIASON OFFICE INSPIRED BY: Parks and Recreation. CONCEPT: It's the last stop before redundancy, where only the useless of the useless reside. Since the centaurs have no desire to liase with wizards, no one in this office ever has to do any actual work. So what happens when suddenly, the centaurs change their minds? POTENTIAL IDEAS/TWISTS/GOALS: This is a great opportunity for the Stepping Up story, wherein characters are forced to grow because they're suddenly faced with actual challenges. The office could be given a new Head, who is driven/idealistic and desires to see the office turned around and not as the laughing stock of the Ministry. #7 I ♥ NY INSPIRED BY: N/A. CONCEPT: The Harry Potter world in New York. I mean, COME ON it would be freaking fabulous. There's so much potential for worldbuilding and exploring what Wizarding society is like in an American city, as opposed to London. The same could be done in other major cities around the world, really. But NYC is kind of iconic. And I'm obsessed with it. POTENTIAL IDEAS/TWISTS/GOALS: The Quadpot World Series. In the same way that literally every other country thinks that it's hilarious that the USA has a "World Series" for a sport no other country but Canada can compete in, I imagine Quadpot could be the Wizarding counterpart. (I love you, America, but it is funny, okay?) Since this setting is huge and the possibilities are endless, it may help to originate with a premise that includes more common ground and limits the cast possibilities somewhat. Perhaps a Wizarding school (a day school, as opposed to a boarding school?)? A shopping strip similar to Diagon Alley? Entire blocks for Wizarding residences? A Hit Wizard precinct? |
