what kind of icons are you trying to make? do you have an example? also be sure to always save as .png and not .jpg because .jpg really messes up the quality of even the nicest icons.

i have no idea to be honest, i think i might be a little too hard on my self. to me it just doesn't look clear enough. that'd be awesome! my steps:

i crop the image first.
second, i CRTL + ALT+ M , is the auto smart fix it sorta makes it a bit brighter.
third, CTRL + L to adjust the brightness.
fourth, sharpen it.
fifth, re size the image and then save.

i like how this icon is;
Photobucket

but i'm not sure how to do that.

Don't sharpen before you re-size. Sharpening should be the last thing you do.

Experiment.

Also look at tutorials. I know live journal has a lot of comms with them if you want links?

Like the others said though crop, experiment and just play around till you find something that you like/works for you. I know some of mine looked horrible at first but I'm slowly getting there. Just persevere :)

As far as I'm concerned, 90% of an icon is in the crop. You can clean up an image as much as you want, but if you crop beneath the eyebrows or ignore the rule of thirds, your icons are going to look like shit.

I wrote a quick and basic Photoshop tutorial here: http://asylums.insanejournal.com/rp_tutorials/180303.html

But as [info]english just said, the cropping is a BIG factor.

that's really helpful, but i'm using photoshop elements and some of the things aren't labeled the same.
