I guess I can understand wanting to be sympathetic to people who are upset about it, but at the same time I think there's a line between being respectful and going overboard. I was in a game at the time too and I don't recall the character getting dropped or changed even if the player was a huge personal fan of his.
I guess I'm glad the general consensus has been that there's not necessarily any cause to immediately change things in these situations.
