Layout: Facebook news feed

A mockup of a Facebook news feed was requested earlier, and... yeah, I can't resist interesting coding like that. I've made it as simple as possible to modify (each post is a table row, each comment is a self-contained table), but it still does take a little bit of effort to set up. Still, hopefully it can find some use. :) Also, I may have been reading too much Alpha Flight recently. Best dysfunctional-yet-somehow-effective Canadian superteam ever.

CODE AND INSTRUCTIONS:

0. a) Remember to check the Disable Auto-Formatting button on the entry, or your spacing will be all weird and not-pretty. (This also means that if you have other stuff in the same entry, you'll have to manually put in the line breaks.)
b) Upload your characters' icons to your webspace. They should be 50 by 50 pixels. I'd suggest uploading them all to the same folder and naming them things like "newsfeedjane" and "newsfeedhenry", so that all you have to do if you copy and paste lines is replace the character's name.

1. Table setup and title area:

2. For each item on the news feed, copy and paste the appropriate section. Each item will be a new row in the main table.

WALL POST:

JOIN A GROUP:

RELATIONSHIP STATUS:

BECOME A FAN:

CHANGE PROFILE PICTURE:

NEW FRIEND:

3. For each sub-comment under a post, insert the following code before the </td></tr>. Each sub-comment is its own table.

"LIKE":

TEXT COMMENT:

4. Don't forget to finish off the table:

NOTES:
1. It would be nice if you could upload the itty-bitty icons to your own webspace, for the sake of preventing me from running out of bandwidth and causing headaches. Thank you!
2. Modify to your heart's content. If you have problems with it or find any errors in the coding, please let me know.
3. A link back to [info]rp_tutorials somewhere so other people can find this if they like it would be awesome.
4. If you use it, feel free to comment here with a link and I'll post it up as an example.

hahahaha enjoy your upcoming ~*fairy aids*~. (WORST. PLOT. EVER. ... at least as offensive as MAJOR MAPLELEAF'S AIDS BABY KILLING SPREE ADVENTUE.)

my favourite part, ngl, is the gradual decline of the quality of the art the closer you get to the 90's...

...I am gonna admit that I kinda liked all of JP's "*koff* *koff* Go... my sister... save *koff* yourself!" nonsense. It was so stupid and pointless, and yet I kind of got into it. But yeah, very offensive and awful. "No one in the Marvel Universe is gay! They're just... fairies." D: Yikes. (Honestly, though, who didn't know that JP was gay? That scene with Raymonde early on, just before he's offed? "You have a daughter? But... but how?" He was so honestly bewildered, lol. That was in the way early issues, and it was entirely obvious even then.)

But LOL, Major Mapleleaf and the Joanne storyline, ouch, ouch, so painful. And yeah. '90s comics were just so awful all-round. Everybody was on steroids. :/

i hated everything about that story arc. iirc byrne was pretty annoyed they wouldn't allow him to outright state that northstar was gay since he had specifically set out to make a gay superhero. i fuckin love byrne even if there was some weirdness there.

the 90s is also when they shunted off af to that awful b-team and turned walter into a woman via magic for the lulz, apparently. OKAY, COMICS. you weirdos.

I didn't know that he wanted to explicitly state that Northstar was gay! I don't know if I would've appreciated that. I kind of like the way that Byrne handled it -- he made it preeeetty clear that Jean-Paul was into men without ever making a big deal about it. I mean, when Heather calls him up to come back to AF after she decides to reform them and you see Jean-Paul's house, when he's doing laps in his pool and some handsome fellow in a swimsuit answers the phone for him? That just seemed way more natural to me than his actual coming-out in #107 or whenever it was, when it was SO forced and lecturey and AIDS AWARENESS WEEK TV special-esque. But then, I wasn't around in 1983/4 when Byrne was doing the title, so I don't know if it would've been so clear to a contemporary reader.

LOL forever. "Wanda Langkowski". The creative team was on some pretty good crack when that one happened.

he did! he talks about it on his website, it's really heartening. i feel like if marvel had loosened the reins a little and allowed him to actually straight up say "yeah this dude's gay" byrne would have handled it maturely and not like... well, not like fucking lobdell, you know?

"dude we're out of plot ideas what should we do" "I DON'T KNOW MAN I JUST SMOKED A HUGE BOWL" "WELL THINK OF SOMETHING!!!" AND THEN MAGICAL SEX CHANGES

Ah, thanks for that link! That's interesting. I love the process of elimination there. "Must have a gay character. But which one? Hm. None of the girls, because I don't want people to mistake me for Chris Claremont. Mac? No, he's married. Michael? Too minority. Puck? Too short. Sasquatch? ...no, that's freaky. It must be the arrogant French-Canadian pretty-boy athlete!"

<3 I think that's how about 90% of comics must get written, really. It's hard to explain some of the insanity that goes on there, other than to just assume that everybody was on some seriously weird highs.

WELL REALLY. he IS french. (...-canadian.)

that's at least how it worked at marvel in the 90's. when they hired you they gave you a speedball and a case of Surge.

Yeah, for sure. And he has girly powers, pointy ears, incredibly shaped eyebrows, and very pretty bone structure, SO. The choice was obvious.

Ha! Or just hooked you up to a caffeine IV and stuck electrodes into your brain if you didn't come up with something, anything, by deadline. "Draw faster, peons. Draw faster. Ye-e-e-ss, our evil plan to suffocate the world under 79 zillion redundant X-Men-spinoff monthlies is working! Ahahaha! Ahahaha!! Ahahahahaha!!!"
