Welcome to InsaneJournal. Maybe you're new here, maybe you're not. Either way if you've been around the roleplaying community long enough, you'll notice that InsaneJournal, like pretty much every other forum-based website out there, allows anonymous comments. But Anonymous is a double-edged sword; the allure of anonymity is all too appealing. It can protect your privacy and ensure your (semi) freedom within the Web. Unfortunately, a lot of people are keen to use it as a means to attack others. If you have been subjected to such attacks, or if you simply want to prevent it early, then this tutorial is for you.

You'll see on the left side (or top part) of your screen that there is a number of options to choose from. Under the Journal header, click the link that reads Comment Settings.

This is one of my favourite features about InsaneJournal. On this page, you will see a variety of options to select from which can help you keep safe and, perhaps more importantly, retain your sanity and not reduce you into a panicked puddle of paranoia.



If you are running a game, you may also use this page to protect your players from an onslaught of anonymous. Or, alternatively, you can protect your musebox/CDJ/et cetera.

As you can see, next to the spot where it says Enable comments there is a drop down menu. Click on that and select your desired option; by default, Everybody will be able to comment but you can change it to allow Registered Users only, or even Friends Only. Personally, I go with Registered Users.



Alternatively: where it says Comment screening, you may select to screen comments from Anonymous, Non-Friends, or Everyone. This is useful for games.

You may also select to log the IP addresses to anonymous or anybody who comments to your journal – however, this may not do you much good unless you plan on comparing the IP addresses of the offender with everyone who has ever commented ever, or if you happen to be well-versed in Googlestalking.
