[Hatter had a little more sanity in his eyes than usual, thanks to a quick swig of Clarity before leaving his home. He had to make that the most, and he'd be needing to find ways to get more of it soon enough. The intricacies to doing that were all in his mind, when he was able to remember it at least. Most of the time he forgot time and place and it all blended together in his messy mind, but that was Wonderland. It made a certain type of sense, but only once and awhile. He didn't have the bravery to go looking on the Queen's side of Wonderland, because she might be there but he felt like she'd appear if he started to doubt it. But he wandered around the sanctuaries and spoke to the mushrooms. They talked about the weather. They always talked about the weather. Obsessed, they were, with rain and sun.

No Hatter was looking for something in particular, as he hovered not far outside of the very entrance that took Alice into Wonderland the first time. Dark eyes were sharp, and he took off his hat only so he could run hands through his messy dark hair, plopping the hat right back on the top afterward. He was in his usual haphazard amount of colorful clothing mixed with basic earth tones, and he had a little pack slung over his shoulder. The problem was he'd tried a few times now to see if he could poke his way through the door, and it wasn't opening to him. He wouldn't leave after Jude was killed, because he promised, and also he didn't like human pain. But now it was frustrating. He saw the hotel once and there was music and dancing and pink drinks and he wanted those again.

Frowning, he opened his pack to take out his journal and checked the map he drew again. Then again, he drew about twenty different maps and they all took him to different places. They were all right too. Go figure. For now he was just wishing he had more Clarity and thinking through the next step.]

[Alice had been wondering, as Alices were prone to do, or so she was told. Her journal was sometimes open in her hands, other times perches precariously on her head. Her feet, however, remained in motion, leading her this way and that. There wasn't one corner of Wonderland she hadn't turned, or one rock she hadn't overturned, and yet she thought that the land kept surprising her. Rarely, if ever, did a path take her the same way twice.

She wasn't surprised when her boots took her to Hatter, or at least she wasn't surprised that they took her somewhere unexpected. By now her journal was tucked under her arm, and she regarded him curiously, head canting to the side and golden hair spilling over one shoulder. His back was to her, his attention on his journal, and she crept behind him with silent feet Cat had taught her, nary as shuffle or a step heard. From over his shoulder she peeked, frowning as she saw a map that made little sense to her, no sense of where or what paths he was going or coming or straying from.]

Where does it go?

[Hatter was far from aware when it came to his space. Anyone could sneak up on him, it was to be expected. He always expected the unexpected. Normally when his mind was fuzzy he wouldn't be surprised either, just blink at people to make certain they weren't going away before replying. This time his head was full of less nuts and bolts so he did startle at her sudden voice, whirling around with wide eyes.

It took less than a second to recognize Alice and he smiled, dimples showing, pleased as punch to see his favoritest of all Alices.] Hello hello hello! [He didn't ask her where she'd been or what she was doing. He assumed it was everywhere and whatever she wanted, that was how Wonderland worked. It was why Alice fit in well, Hatter thought.

He looked down at the map and turned it on the side and around again.] Maybe the queen's palace. Not the Queen-Queen. The other queen. [The one less prone to chopping heads, although he suspected all queens wanted to do that as often as possible.] The big gateway, you know that? With the swinging up and down over the moat thing. [Even when relatively sane he couldn't always translate his thoughts and images to words well. He scrunched up his nose.] Big door. Castle door. I thought it might be the door.

[Alice reacted as she always reacted to talk of queens, a straightening of her spine, a readying of her senses. Even when he assured here it wasn’t that queen, it was a queen, and Alice didn’t let her guard or her glower slip just yet.] You’re trying to get to the castle? [The glower slipped into a confused frown, a series of expressions that was very common to Alice.] Why would you be going there?

[Hatter feared very few things, but he feared the queen. He told the Riddle Man he couldn't die, and he knew that to be true, but death could take many different forms. Dying for humans wasn't the same as hatters, and the queen would find a way. She was creative. He remembered the other one, vaguely. He remembered a lot of things vaguely.] No no no. No. Don't like castles. Smell like hay.

[Hatter focused on Alice and put his map back into his pack.] I was looking for the door. Out of here. It went away, the one I used before, I don't know the way out again. I don't like leaving Wonderland. [So he didn't, he forgot where it was and good riddance. Now though, he was considering it.]

[Of all the reasons to dislike castles, especially castles in Wonderland, hay was not high on Alice's list. But she shrugged, for who could make sense of the twisty little turns the mind could do, especially Hatter.] That's easy. The door is-- [She spun on the heel of her black boot, air billowing the blue of her skirt. She raised one hand to point in the direction and realized... no, that wasn't where the door was.

She spun again, taking a step and cupping her hands over her eyes, as if shade would make her direction better, could make some sense of anything, really. But the new outlook didn't change anything and Alice couldn't see where the door out was. How very queer. She had taken it before, and it had been where the way to the other forest was. But where it was no, she couldn't no.] Have you tried walking about until you find it? [It had served her well once when she first came back to Wonderland. Perhaps it would help them now.]

[Hatter's eyes widened when she seemed so very sure she knew the way, and he was glad, because finding his way out of Wonderland usually seemed like a ridiculous concept. He was positive he wouldn't like other places too, outside of a moment here or there where they'd be different and new. Although he did like new things. And foods! Teas! He needed to leave, probably, maybe, why was everything getting mixed up in his head again? He took a deep breath and let it out, all while she was trying to figure out how to leave.

But she misplaced it too.] Ha! It wasn't me. I thought I lost it. Terribly careless of me, but not if it's careless of us. Wonderland must be having a laugh. [Phew, that was a relief. He stretched and twirled his hat on his head.] I'm always walking about, Alice, how else would I get around? [This was where he was meant to be. Hatter narrowed his eyes at her curiously.] Where'd you come from?

[Green eyes blinked owlishly at him.] From away. [Of course.] But when you walk, do you walk with purpose? Do you have a destination or are you concerned with the journey? [Certainly that might be the source of the problem.] Why do you wish to leave Wonderland?

[Hatter frowned and thought it over, blinking owlishly himself, either at her or indeed himself.] Maybe destination. Iris said not to come, but I want to. If I went there she might be be okay with it after that. [He kicked the ground sheepishly. He didn't listen much to her concerns; he was a Hatter, what did he have to fear other than the queen?] And I wander, I like wandering, haven't been able to, left and I became a man stained with red. A lot of red. [He was glad to be away from Jude, forever probably.]

Your Iris! [Alice clapped her hand daintily over her lips, the smile threatening to peek out from underneath. It had been such a long time since they had anyone new in Wonderland, and Hatter’s reactions only made her grin. It died softly as he mentioned the red, lips curling into a frown.] No more red. Never more. Let us find Iris and the door. We found it once before. Come. [She pulled at the arm of his coat once, nails scraping fleetingly across the fabric as she marched, letting her purpose guide her feet.] Did she say where she is?

[Hatter gave a bashful grin in reply and shrugged his shoulders, because yes, in his mind, his Iris. The only Iris he knew, so that made her his, just like he thought Alice was his and the Cat and Mouse.] She's in trouble, I think. But not the fun trouble. [He loved trouble, personally, except when it was the queen, and he thought that was the type she was dealing with. Something like the queen, and that wasn't good.] She belongs here you know, she's mad, she's wonderfully mad.

[He took her hand and tucked it into his arm like they were a lady and a knight, because Hatter liked playing at roles. If he was going to be a knight and save damsels, he'd practice. No horses though. He hated the smell of hay.] I think .... [His mind was a rolling ever-moving thing, and it made he couldn't always pinpoint facts. Like a needle in the haystack.] Dark place. City. The Riddle Man is from there.

[Mad people certainly belonged together and if Hatter was certain Iris was mad, she must be. Alice's other hand rest atop Hatter's arm, unthinkingly falling back on manners she hadn't needed or used in months.] A city, a city... Do you know what it is called? She had seen names that flitted through the journals and some she recalled when she had her counterpart and others she was told were fictional. The Riddle Man being from there hardly helped her. At all.] All I know is one... [What had that girl given her the key to once?] Gotham?

[Iris kept talking about how being mad was a bad thing and everyone was mean to her about it. He thought it only made sense - in his way of things making sense - that she'd be in a place where madness was encouraged. Think of all the fun she could have not worrying about the judgment! It was a flawless plan, even if she kept arguing. Maybe he'd just show up and she'd change her mind. That could work. Why not?]

Gotham. Gotham. Gotham! Yes. That one. Dark. With creeeeepy crawly monsters. [He made a spooky sound at the end there, because it seemed like the thing to do. He wasn't actually scared in the least. Hatter had self-preservation skills only when it came to the queen. Everything else, he was happy to risk his neck for something interesting.] She's there, a man took her, name of Bruce. He talked to me about her, very serious, I don't like serious. [He wondered if the man was telling Iris she was bad for being mad.]

I don’t recall any monsters. [Then again, her time in Gotham was fleeting. One quick turn of the key and step in, only to step out when she realized it reminded her of her counterpart’s Las Vegas. A very dark, gloomy, city.

She had grown weary of gloomy cities after London.] Well then we must help you get your Iris. [Alice never did approve of being with bad people, men or queens.] Come, [she squeezed his arm] show me your map and let’s try to find the way out. We found it once. We can do it again.

[Hatter was glad to have another head with him, because even with potions his head could get blurry. Alice was so smart. She always knew things, even when she didn't know anything at all.] You're the best Alice. [It was a high compliment, better than his Alice, he liked her older and smart and happy in Wonderland.] Let's gooooo this way. [He pointed to the side and took out the map to show her, wandering down the path.]

[ooc: fini!]
