[At 10:44 AM on Monday, a major leader of the Pro-Russian Separatist Movement in Eastern Ukraine is assassinated.
It is not precisely subtle.
The man is in the middle of giving a speech to his supporters when he is sniped from the window of a building across the street. He is struck once in the head, and blood sprays his comrades behind him and the rapt audience gathered in the front row, globules of red hanging on lips and stinging eyes.
It isn't immediately apparent where the shot came from, and the shooter's position isn't discovered until ten minutes later. There is no one to find in the old church tower, and no weapon left behind, though the tripod still sits in the belfry.
For an organization with the assets to dig deeply enough into the rebel's history, there is a long list of scrubbed money. With some work, it traces to the account of a diplomat who was murdered a week earlier, his throat slit in the night by an unknown assailant, left on his bedroom carpet to bleed out. His young son found him the next morning.
From the dead diplomat the money splinters. It came to him from accounts both foreign and domestic. To the right eyes, the account numbers and distribution have Hydra's prints all over them.
The execution was public, but the message is private, visible only to a select few. Someone is following money, fresh intelligence, and the old dark pathways of the bad days. What connects the dead men aside from the many-headed monster remains to be seen, and the killer has yet to leave behind a single usable piece of evidence.
The rebel movement is quick to blame American interference. International pundits generally lay the blame at the feet of a well-known schism between the speaker and one of the other generals in the movement. The diplomat's death is a mystery, but an estranged son is suspected. Suspects are found and investigated, and someone else slips through the cracks.]
