[Ginny had really been kidding about the whole "special privileges" thing. Mainly, she had said it to get a rise out of everyone. Hopefully, James understood that--but she planned to explain it either way.

Some of the Honeydukes candies she had bought with Neville were tossed onto the table beside her as she flopped into an arm chair, sitting sideways in it with legs dangling over one of its arms. Idly, she shuffles through a pack of Exploding Snap cards while she waits.]

[James wasn't thick enough to think anyone would believe him if he promised them "special privileges." Not only because it was wrong, but because it had clearly been a joke, cramped handwriting and all. He hadn't even actually intended to meet Ginny Weasley, his future daughter-in-law, in the Common Room, but as the portrait swung open and he ducked through the hole, there was no mistaking that Weasley red—certainly not for Evans red.

With a smile, his tie loose around his neck, James shrugged his bag to the floor and sat himself in the chair opposite Harry's love interest. He surveyed the spread of sweets. Very seriously, he pushed his glasses up his nose and tipped up his chin.] Are these your offerings?

[Weasley red should have been its own patented color at this point, given how easily it was to identify any member of the family by that particular hue. She offered a grin and a nod of greeting but kept with the overhand shuffling of the cards. One was going to explode on her eventually.]

Those? If it makes you feel better, I'll say yes. [She inclined her head and shook out her hand after the last card in the deck decided to explode on her.] I was a bit overzealous in Hogsmeade. Not all of us can escape abroad when we're feeling shut in.

[She wasn't Evans, but James supposed Ginny was a fit girl. Easy smile, freckles, and that hair—along with a sense of humor?—he could see why Harry liked her. He grinned, scooping the sweets up in the parabola of his arms and toward his chest, as if they were indeed his.

And of course he laughed when the card exploded in the girl's face. He held his hand out, palm flat, as if waiting for her to offer up the cards as well.] Hogsmeade is abroad. You just have to get creative. [He wriggled his fingers.]

[Some ten years older than James, he'd never known her personally. But even young, she was making a name for herself as a ruthless, scrupulous woman who wasn't worried about trifles such as truth when it came to reporting.] I know her, yeah. [But he couldn't keep his expression serious for long. The mention of Arthur Weasley, imagined now as a very red, but balding weasel got a laugh out of the elder Potter.] Weasles are very noble creatures, young Weasley. [He tsked.]

[He knew the name from Harry partly, but mostly from the books he'd been plucking from the Library that contained back issues of The Daily Prophet bound together.] Beetle. That does fit, doesn't it? She always had that look about her. Very... beetley. [James was a master of wit. He grinned.

His eyebrows lifted with hers.] It's the truth. Very majestic. Envision it now—a fiery red weasel, perhaps with a touch of fur thinning from the crown of its kingly skull, loping with grace through the underbrush of the Forest. [He pretend to wipe a tear from his eye.] So beautiful. I only wish I were half as noble as that.

The Rita he knew of was a bit heavy in the jaw with hair a beaten blond and a lot of rhinestones charmed onto otherwise unadorned things—glasses, for instance.] No. Her nails—they very long. Not at all like the chickens I've seen, who prefer the trim look.

[He gave the youngest Weasley a his best winning Potter smile.] As I said, it's the truth.

The joke started about his fellow future father-in-law, but she was not Ron and thought about her words before they came tumbling out of her mouth. Somehow, she wasn't sure that would be taken well, all things considered. Instead, she cleared her throat.] Dad would have a good sense of humor about it. [And she paused, wondering again if any family were here.]

[James' grin brightened at Ginny's pantomime.] Maybe she looks different now. I can't say I've been seeking her columns out, truthfully.

[Being as good-humored as he was, and knowing Arthur as he did, the elder Potter didn't think about anything he said lending itself to offense. It was all fun, bit of elbowing and laughing, but nothing meant with any malice. But James didn't have time to agree with the girl, catching as he did that fleeting look on her face the bespoke to worry and wonder—was she alone? (Because, although he could be quite oblivious, James was not insensitive to others.)

The boy shifted on the chair, slumping a bit lower.] There are a couple other Weasleys, you know.

That makes her give a short, weak laugh and rub her face. The joke comes easily enough.] Don't suppose you know what it's like to find out you have a kid, then? Potter is such a common surname and all. [Ron's kid? Her eyebrows lifted. Please tell her the kid was Hermione's and not someone like Lavender Brown. She snorted a bit.] Oh, do I? [That wasn't all that surprising, really. Wizarding convention to name children for family and all--and, really, she couldn't see herself telling Harry no if he wanted to name children after his parents.

Although the idea of them procreating when they were still trying their hand at dating again made her a little--well, it was a lot to think about. She passed a hand in front of her face in an attempt to conceal the fact that her face was starting to match her hair.] How d'you know about this? [It was curious, not accusing.] Did...Ron and Bill's kids tell you?
