There were times that he could close his eyes and pretend that things had never changed from what he remembered. In fact, many things had not really changed at all, but then there were the small things that threw him for a loop. Teachers that were different. A tree where he didn't recall one. A shift in the way the other students talked. He was from a different time, and sometimes, it made him ache to remember that difference.
But of course, some things were still the same. James. Sirius. Remus. Of course they were here, and of course they behaved as they always did, and at times, it was enough to get himself lost in. Why would he think anything could be different, after all? HE was no different, so why should they be anything else?
Severus let out a sigh and let his feet carry him down the slight hill, further away from the school but still within sight, seeking out the peace and quiet of a sunny patch of grass. Term would be starting soon enough, the same (yet different) classes as before, and Severus just wasn't sure what he would do. People here knew him, or at least thought they knew him. An older version, reviled and loved in the same breath, and he wasn't exactly sure what to do with that sort of attention. He wasn't the sort to bask in the spotlight in the slightest; that just brought too much focus onto him, and that was the last thing that he ever needed or wanted.
He flopped down on the grass, limbs splayed, and stared up at the sky. It wasn't quite blue, not quite gray, hovering between the two into a blandness that he was quite fond of. It made him think back to simpler times, back home, when he met a red-headed girl who didn't make fun of him like the other children did. She was nice, unlike home, and Severus wondered why she couldn't be here as well, even if their relationship was anything but troubled. She'd have something to say, or some look, and he'd be able to do this.
But for now, there was him, the grass, and the sky, the school year looming ahead.
