Sanctuary; Log: Claire B/Helen M
[It didn't take too long for Claire to find the Sanctuary door, thanks to the description Helen had given her. She was a little nervous, sure, but she wasn't afraid. She never got afraid any more - what did she really have to fear, after all? So here she was, dressed in jeans and a dark green tank with a gray hoodie over it, stepping through the door from the hotel into the world of Helen's Sanctuary. As she emerged in a large foyer, she blinked, then looked around for a long moment.]

Hello?

[Museum quality was right. Her house could be a museum in its own right, or a historical landmark. It had been a part of Old City for long enough the inhabitants forgot what it was like without it.] Thank you, we put a lot of work into it. In my world there are usually people here. Abnormals who wish to stay. My team. [But it was empty. Strange thought. Helen smiled warmly.] It's nice to meet you too. Where are you from?

[It was hard not to stare at everything, but Claire really didn't want to seem rude. As she dragged her eyes away from some figurines and focused again on Helen, she brought herself mentally back to the conversation.] Texas, originally. Odessa. I've moved around a couple times, though. When this whole...hotel/journal thing started, I found myself in New York.

[Helen didn't mind when she stared. In fact, she found a certain kind of pride in the curiosity. And it spoke highly of Claire, that she was intrigued by something many people would brush off soon. After hundreds of years, she was a quick judge of character.] I'm from London, in the 19th century. [The accent gave her away, but the rest of her seemed modern. She told Claire already about her age. She gestured for the young woman to follow her. She had a variety of rooms, and one was a sitting room, where they could be for right now.]

I've always been fond of New York.

You're actually from the 19th century? Is that where...when we are now? [Except Helen didn't seem to be...Victorian? Or whatever. If time travel was going to be a thing, she was seriously going to have to adjust to all this. After a moment of hesitation, she followed the woman.] It's okay.

Yes, from the 19th century. I know, I don't look it anymore. That's one thing you learn over the years, how to adapt quickly to the changes. [Helen would look just as comfortable in a corset and dress, with her hair delicately coiffed. She was glad not to have that anymore, however. Terrible for the spine and difficult to run around in.] So you said you figured out your gifts not too long ago. That must have been a struggle. People tend to think that getting super abilities would be exciting, but it's not all it's cracked up to be, is it?

I hope you're right. [Her voice softened, and she picked up her pace just a little to catch up to Helen.] Almost four years ago. It was pretty weird. I first figured it out when I cut my hand and the next day, there was no cut. But it's been...useful, I guess? I wouldn't be here now without them.

Would you like any tea? [She gestured for Claire to take a seat if she'd like once they were in the sitting room.] It sounds like it might have been triggered when your body developed more. There's a young man I know who had a similar situation. [Helen put the kettle on, leaving it time to heat up.] He was born with gifts but they didn't start really advancing until he was around fourteen. Can you tell me more about what you can do?

Sure, thanks. [Claire sat on a gorgeous chair and stared around once again for a moment, then returned her attention to Helen, nodding her understanding.] It's happened that way with others where I come from, too. But some - like my uncle Peter - didn't develop them until later. He was in his twenties. [At the question, Claire gave a small shrug.] I heal. From anything. Cuts, broken bones, fire, explosions. Anytime I die, I heal and wake up again. [With the exception of something being stabbed in that one spot, but Claire fully intended on telling no one about that ever.]

I have a cabinet of teas, if you don't like English Breakfast. [The cabinet was by her desk and easy to get to, but for now she had that box handy. Helen listened to Claire thoughtfully. She knew a great deal about special abilities from a scientific side, but it was always different depending on who it was.] Interesting. It must be hereditary or genetic on some level. [She was a scientist, and scientists could sound detached, but Helen had a natural warmness and empathy that kept her from being too clinical.] Extraordinary. Explosions too? [That seemed unusual, her body must reform itself. Hm.] And what does it feel like to you?

No, that's fine. [She smiled a little, watching as the older woman prepared the tea.] I think it is, too. From what I know, only those with abilities have parents who also have them....like, my whole birth family has abilities. My uncle - he has something called...I think it's called empathic mimicry? I'm not sure. Anyway, my dad could fly, and my mom could control fire. My father's mother had prophetic dreams.

[She was relaxing a bit, somehow trusting this woman, Helen. She seemed really nice and she was easy to talk to...and Claire didn't mind having someone to tell all this to.] Yeah...one time I was near a nuclear blast, or what was about to be one, anyway, and I just...my skin grew back.

[At the question, Claire's smile faltered, and she dropped her eyes to the tea.] Nothing, anymore. I don't even notice when I'm hur-injured.

Hereditary, certainly. How marvelous. [Helen was part of the Sanctuary network, she saw all manner of strange things, and she found it very engaging.] Empathic mimicry, so he mimicked the abilities of other people around them by connecting through combined energy. Or something of the like. [She'd have to see it for herself to know for sure.] Sorry if you're not on the 'it's marvelous' side of things, I don't mean to seem overly enthusiastic. My adopted son is a werewolf, and there were years where he hated thinking about it at all. [If only Henry were there now.]

Hm. [She grew thoughtful with what Claire said about not feeling.] I'm terribly sorry, that must feel very alienating. Pain isn't something we want to feel, but once you can't anymore, suddenly the option is missed. [Helen offered cream and sugar for the tea, if Claire wanted it.] Did it come with the powers? I'm trying to think why, perhaps so you would not feel the intensity of the nuclear blast, pure pain like that can drive a person insane or deeply traumatize them.

Something like that. It happened if...well, if he was just near someone, I think. Like he picked up my ability by being near me. [She shrugged a little] And it saved his life. [Claire blinked at the casual mention of a "werewolf"] Those exist?

[Claire accepted the sugar in silence, sweetening the tea a bit, mainly just for the look. Sitting back with her cup, the blonde looked up at Helen.] No...something was done to my brain. I don't know what. And it changed me.

Oh yes, in my experience, I learned not to doubt something's existence. I was nearly always proved wrong at some point. [Helen knew the universe was full of every possibility. It was what she loved about it. One of many reasons. Her eyebrows went up at the brain part and she tapped a fingernail against the side of her tea cup.] Something that managed to get past by your advanced healing long enough to do that? Your brain must be cutting off that part of your sensory somehow, since it is a new development.

Things like that...I just never even suspected. [Claire shook her head, a little dazed, then refocused her attention on Helen. She'd already talked to Bruce about this, and he had some good suggestions...maybe Helen would have more.] The top of my head was cut off. This guy...Sylar...he had this ability to be able to see how peoples' abilities worked, by looking at their brains and sort of...absorb them. Kind of like Peter, but not. People usually died. He said I was unique....special, and he "fixed" me. After that, I couldn't feel pain anymore.
