Fairly broken. [Eyebrows.] In a physical sense.

[Determined.] Not enough to take stupid risks. Was it just about the pain?

[His expression twists. He hates this conversation. A quick outward movement of one elbow and unencumbered arm, an invitation to sit slightly closer. A quick wiggle of his wrist, his fingers, a shift of his weight, none of it easy.] Can't move very well. Scar tissue.

[Her face softens. She slides into the space beside him. Elbow to elbow.] We can find a specialist, someone to help. I didn't realize it was that bad. [Fingertips on the back of his wrist.]

[An easy shift of the hip, and he actually leans on her, physically, face coincidentally angling out of sight. He drifts his arm away from her touch.] Seen specialists. Just a lot of damage. The burns recently, and the ones on my back. [A shrug more felt than seen.]

[Coincidentally. Pepper's fingers close on nothing.]

I didn't know about the ones on your back. [Quiet.] They're causing you pain?

[Heavy, solid contact in shoulder, which he maintains without moving.] Pain is the wrong word. Like... [Cough.] Stiff.

[Pepper doesn't shift under contact, but her hands are loose in front of her.] Stiff? [Guessing.] Scarring, or the skin? Or muscle damage?

Some of all of it. The point is, it's hard to move around. Not that I can't lift, just that I can't... [He stretches out his hand and flexes his fingers, which move without much dexterity.]

[Unthinking.] You don't let it show. [Her chin is tilted against her shoulder, watching.] You can do it, but it isn't easy? [Question. Beat.] This was what you were trying to fix?

It makes it harder to work. Also, I am not as pretty. [Dead serious.]

[Equally serious. Her hand on his wrist.] Okay, I can get it making it difficult to work. That's a pass. But pretty? Tony, you don't look like a thirty something playboy who never did anything with his life anymore. You were pretty then. But no matter how your scars look, it doesn't make you less pretty. You look like someone who will kill himself to save someone else, over and over and looks good in a tuxedo. I know you think it matters. You're still aggravatingly attractive, no matter where you've acquired scars.

[Fond exasperation.] Looks very good in a tuxedo. You're a handsome man, Tony Stark. No matter how many scars.

[Shoulder to shoulder. She's looking at his profile.] You think it's that bad? You don't lose who and what you are just by shedding a tux, Tony, or because the skin underneath it is different. I don't care what it looks like. No matter what it looks like, you'll be attractive until you're dead.

You're different. [Tap of his head to her shoulder, and a deep sigh.] You're biased. You know me too well and will always know my brilliance.

[Her weight slides against his shoulder. Teasing.] Entirely possible. I'm charm-free. Unbiased, objective opinion.
