Severus had been more than a little surprised at the sizable paycheck he'd received. The amount seemed to be in American dollars, as well as he could determine -- judging from the prices at the grocer's. At an exchange rate of roughly one and a half dollars to the pound, and five pounds to the Galleon ... well, it was over a hundred Galleons. Not bad, and especially not for basically doing something he loved. The brewing part of the job, at least. Seeing patients, he had to admit, wasn't precisely his cup of tea.
Though he wasn't normally given to lavish spending on fine dining, as long as he had the funds right now, he thought ... why not? What else did he have to spend it all on, besides books and perhaps clothes? Somehow he suspected, however, that Lily still wouldn't consider the outing a 'date', as such, in spite of the fancy dinner. Even if he had managed to procure theater tickets, as he'd joked. He suspected, even if the idea caused an uncomfortable lump to settle into the pit of his stomach, that she was simply hesitant to attach the term 'dating' to anything she might do with him.
She would, he feared, always consider him only to be her best friend. In spite of snogging him in the woods, or talking -- even jokingly -- about marriage and children, or the incredible good night kiss she'd given him Sunday before they had parted ways. (In fact, it had certainly made him not want to part ways for the night, but seeing as she'd already been fairly tired, he had forced himself to leave.) But in spite of those fears, and the accompanying feelings of hopeless dread, he still wanted to see her, to spend time with her, in case one day she decided that he didn't need to be relegated to the 'just a friend' category any longer.
He knocked on the door to Lily's cabin at precisely fifteen minutes to seven, and then again put his hands behind his back as he waited for her to answer. This time, however, he did so with a purpose -- apart from simply to quell his nerves. He wanted to surprise her with the single red rose he'd bought. He'd had to get it at the grocer's, since he hadn't seen a florist, so it wasn't the freshest imaginable, but it would do. It was the thought that counted, after all.
