"Well, I don't have to spy here, do I?" Severus answered, managing a small smile. "Besides, I trusted you to keep it safe." Pity he couldn't say the same regarding his heart, but that was his problem, and decidedly not hers. He walked to where she'd gestured and picked up his wand, slipping it into the pocket of his robes.
He started to ask then if he could help with anything, but Lily appeared to have it covered, so instead he simply moved to the table and took a seat. It did all smell good, and he hadn't eaten much all day, so perhaps he might have something of an appetite before long. He could take a bite or two, at least.
Before he reached for his spoon, however, Severus held out his hand to Lily across the table, after she'd sat down. "I'm sorry I upset you earlier," he said quietly, and then licked his lips. "That certainly wasn't my intention." But apart from that feeble apology, he wasn't certain what to say. He couldn't make it better, but he could endeavor, at least, not to take so much to heart in the future.
