His eyes stayed on Marian as she said her vows, touched by the sincerity and meaning behind the words she had chosen.
Just before they bowed their heads, he saw the pillow Heather picked up, with two rings. As she recited the prayer, though he was listening to the words, his thoughts had moved elsewhere. He had always intended to get Marian a wedding ring, but with everything else, including the gift he had chosen for her, and the engagement ring, he had been unable to get something close to what he thought she deserved. And now, Heather had shown another instance in which she had gone above and beyond anything they had imagined she needed to do for them.
"Don't think that I'll forget this," he said to Heather quietly, his tone teasing, as he took the ring she offered. Lifting Marian's left hand higher, he slid the ring on to her finger.
