As usual, Arthur was up with the first rays of dawn. Also, as usual, he figured Nurse would not be awake yet, and he knew the best cure for that. Scrambling out from under his blankets, he stood up on his mattress and started jumping up and down as hard as he could. "I'M AWAKE! I'M AWAKE! I'M AWAKE! I'M AWAKE!" Nurse always came running into his bedchamber pretty quickly when he did that, and she fetched him breakfast soon after.
However, midway through his third jump, Arthur realized that something was amiss. This was not his bedchamber. Also, by his sixth jump, Nurse had not yet appeared. Ceasing both the yelling and the jumping, he took a better look around. Where were all of his things? Where were his toys? Taking one last, solid leap off the bed, he wandered around. Even his sword, the one Father had made specially for him, was gone. But-- there was another here, a real sword... he knew he was not supposed to touch those yet. Biting his lip, he took another look around to make sure this was not a trick, then tentatively held a hand out, reaching for the grip...
No. Father had specifically told him he was not to touch a real sword until he was old enough to train with the knights, and he must obey his father, the king.
His belly rumbled as he stepped away from the sword. If Nurse was not coming, who was going to bring his meal? Where was everyone? Where was Father? Where was he? Suddenly frightened, Arthur began to cry-- but then, catching sight of the sword again, he made himself stop. Wiping his nose on his sleeve as he straightened, he reminded himself as Father often reminded him, that he was the prince and heir of Camelot, and must be brave. That was true if he was sure a monster lurked beneath his bed, and it was true now. So, trying not to sniffle too loudly, he walked over to the door and turned the handle, peering out into the corridor. Seeing no one about, he crept out of the room; spotting a flight of stairs, he went down them. Nothing was familiar, and while that was still scaring him, it also occurred to him that no adults meant nobody telling him not to do something... this could be fun.
He wandered into a room with a lot of cupboards and a lot of strange-looking things. Fortunately, there was a basket of apples sitting on the table, which would make for a good enough breakfast for now; grabbing one, he thought he should make sure he was right about this no-adults thing. Going over to a door and opening it, he grinned around a mouthful of apple; it went outside. Nurse never let him run around outside in the morning, because that was when the knights started to train. If he really was all alone, he could run and yell and nobody would tell him to stop.
Apple in hand, Arthur let out a loud, "WHOOP!" and took off running around the building he had just left, hollering at the top of his lungs as he did. There seemed to be other buildings like this one, too; but for now, it seemed like a good plan to stick around here.
