Stefan had taken advantage of Elena working to completely redecorate the living room of the cabin in red and gold fabric. He'd bought as many candles as the grocery had left and had put them in random clusters around the room, almost every available surface glowing as he went around lighting the wicks with a lighter. He'd started out with matches, but he was using so many, he'd given up and searched for a lighter in the kitchen draws.
An ice bucket was sat just to the right of the fireplace with a bottle of the best champagne Stefan could afford already set in it, sweating condensation. Stefan had laid a red picnic blanket down on the floor. On top of it, there were a couple of table mats to make stable surfaces to hold champagne glasses, bowls of chocolate, fruit and biscuits, as well as some of Elena and Caroline's brownies he'd found while he was raiding the fridge for food for the picnic. Of course, he wasn't suggesting they eat only sweet things. Stefan had been in the kitchen since Elena had left for work making spinach and ricotta filo pastry packages, smoked salmon and cream cheese crackers, garlic bruschetta topped with a fresh tomato salsa, little balls of breaded mozarella, potato and rosemary scones and boiled quails' eggs. There was probably far too much for just the two of them, but he wanted to show Elena that he was going to be the best boyfriend ever to her.
He'd been struggling the past couple of days, after drinking her blood, to keep control. But he'd been strong. Knowing how lucky he was to have her back after what had happened was enough to keep him strong, even though the cravings had been hard to ignore. Finally, they were starting to die away though. He was sure the drops of her blood he'd been having before the wishes had clearly really helped him. It was definitely progress. And he was so much faster and stronger and alert. He was wide awake and his mind was clearer than it had been in a long time. Perhap Damon and Caroline had a point in saying he should try drinking more human blood... Still, tonight wasn't about blood or vampires or death or worry. Tonight was about Stefan and Elena and love. It was going to be perfects.
Having finally finished lighting all the candles, Stefan went back into the kitchen and put the lighter away again before carrying the last plates of finger food into the living room and positioning them around the blanket, well within reach, but not too crowded. He stood back and looked down at his work. He'd made more effort on the room than himself, but he thought he looked alright. He was wearing a dove grey shirt over his white tank top with plain yet smart blue jeans. He hadn't bothered with shoes, his feet still bare. The party wasn't until later, so he didn't need to worry about going out just yet. Now all there was to do was wait for Elena to get home. He crossed to the sofa and sat down, leaning his head back to wait.
