"Coming back when I did, it was..." He searched for the right word, and fell short. "It was good, in a lot of ways. I didn't want to deal with a lot of what happened." He returned the gesture, his fingers squeezing hers. He knew he hadn't remembered her, though something had lingered in his memory. Why else would he have had their song forever in his head?
He smiled at the look on her face. That was the Heather he had grown so fond of. "It wasn't her fault. I lied to her. Jeanne was...is, a good woman. I even think the two of you might have gotten along. I can't blame her, not really." Especially not considering that she'd stolen his heart.
