It seemed lately that neither of them could catch a break. For two months, the hits just kept coming, and if it wasn't Benjy, it was Alastair--and that was the worst part, at least for Benjy himself. He didn't know if he could truthfully say he preferred his own family dead over Alastair's, but it was almost as painful watching his boyfriend go through grieve his sister as it was to grieve his own parents. It had been two months for him, and while the day-to-day had gotten better, sometimes it would hit him, out of the blue, and he'd be a mess again. Being in their house without them was hard sometimes and he missed them more than he knew how to express, and it was really only having Alastair and his brother around that got him through it. But seeing this person he loved go through it was something else as well. He felt helpless. Whereas the other man had been a big help to him in the aftermath just by being there, he felt like he should be doing more now that their positions had switched; it didn't help that he'd been severely injured the first few days and hadn't even been cleared to go back to work yet. Benjy could be there physically, but it was harder for him to take care of Alastair the way the other man had looked after him. The majority of his burns had come a long way in a week, but the places on his arms and shoulders where the Fiendfyre had gotten him were much slower to heal and the amount of pain potions he was taking kept him asleep more than usual. Not to mention the fact that he couldn't even be with him during the funeral, as Alastair had been with him. Benjy had offered, even though they were supposed to be broken up and it was dangerous for people to know they were together, so he understood when he turned him down, but he still felt extra useless waiting at home for him to come back--and with no way of knowing what condition he'd be in when he did. There wasn't much to do as he waited, and he tried to distract himself as much as he could, but ultimately, Benjy ended up simply falling asleep on the couch, only stirring when the front door closed. He was groggy, but not so much that he didn't immediately reach out for him. "Hey," he said softly, not bothering to ask how he was doing. Even half asleep he could guess. |
