Edgar was being cagey and weird and Benjy didn’t like it. He had something to tell him that he couldn’t say at work, but also didn’t want to say over the journals, but was apparently something he needed to hear? Whenever he was confused, it made Benjy cranky, but it made him especially cranky because the only thing he could think of to make his friend sound like this was talking to him about Alastair. Or maybe something at work, that could explain why he didn’t want to talk there. So he left early, leaving his boyfriend at his flat, and heading over to his friend’s house. Benjy greeted Cate when he saw her, but his attention was really focused on Edgar. “Out with it.” Accusing Bones of being cagey was an understatement, but it was all for good reason. Benjy might never find out what that reason was, but Bones was trying to save his life one way or another. He sighed heavily and put his hands on his hips, looking down at the dirt in front of him. “I got some intel that… you probably aren’t going to like. It might not be true but I’d rather be safe than sorry.” “I can’t read your mind, Edgar, you’re going to have to say it if you want me to know what it is,” Benjy responded, already a little defensive. He couldn’t help it, he felt like this was going to turn into an argument. Again. “...Xavier Selwyn has been named as a Death Eater,” he said, his voice dropping in volume as if they were being overheard. “I don’t think Alastair is one himself, but I don’t think now is the time to take any chances.” “Named by who? And of course Alastair isn’t one, why is that even a question?” “I have a source who has seen them,” Bones said vaguely. “His father is very likely a Death Eater. We know that familial pressure is a big deal in pureblood society. I just want you to be sure, Benj.” Now Benjy was confused. Since when did Edgar have sources he didn’t know about? “Who?” he insisted, feeling the defensiveness rising. “They wear masks, so what could they have seen that makes you think he’s a Death Eater without knowing it for sure?” “Because someone saw him, but they asked to remain anonymous,” Bones snapped, frustration bubbling up. It was necessarily at Benjy, but the situation as a whole. “I’m not saying for sure that Alastair is a Death Eater and I’m going to feel damn silly when you tell me he’s not, but please for my peace of mind will you at least… I don’t know… check? You can even ask him if you want, I don’t care.” The question of what Xavier Selwyn had been seen doing was completely overshadowed by Edgar’s ‘solution.’ “What? No! I don’t need to ask him, or check, whatever you mean by that, because Alastair’s not a Death Eater.” “Benjy, please,” Bones was feeling a little desperate, especially because this was not actually a hypothetical. The DA had named Alastair himself and Bones wasn’t about to let him slip away that easily. “Just to ease my goddamn mind, okay?” “Absolutely not, I’m not asking my boyfriend if he’s a Death Eater, and I’m definitely not looking for evidence. I don’t care if you don’t trust him, because I do and that’s all I need.” Benjy frequently felt defensive when confronted about anything, but now he was actually angry. “Even if his dad was--and that’s a huge if--he’s not. He wouldn’t. He’s not capable of hurting anyone, even for ‘family pressure’ or whatever.” “Do you trust me?” Bones demanded. Benjy scoffed, as though that had anything to do with anything at all. “If there was a mark on his arm, I’d have seen it.” “If they didn’t have ways to hide it we’d just mandate short sleeves for a little while,” Bones shot back. “He doesn’t have a mark,” Benjy insisted. Bones sighed heavily, putting his hands on his hips and willing himself to have patience. He knew this would be a fight, but even with the assurance that he didn’t actually think Alastair had the mark, Benjy was still fighting him. Unfortunately, this wasn’t something Bones could just let go. “We talked about this before, remember? We can’t be too careful? It could be anyone?” Bones reminded him. “I know you trust him and I don’t think he actually does, but the least you can do is just fucking check? It’s not like you know where he is whenever there’s an attack happening. Just find out so we know for sure and if his name comes up in connection we can say we already cleared him.” But ‘could be anyone’ did not include Alastair, and Benjy would have to either see the mark himself or watch him take off the Death Eater mask in order to believe it, and even then maybe not. He certainly wasn’t going to entertain any possibility of it without any evidence at all. “I’m not doing this, I’m not jeopardizing my relationship just because you don’t like or trust him. I know who he is and he’s not that, so unless you have any evidence to go with your accusations, I’m going to work now.” Bones sighed and closed his eyes. He wasn’t getting anywhere tonight, and if what the kids said was true, Benjy wouldn’t die until after he did. If he could prevent that, perhaps this was a non-issue. He’d have to prove this on his own, but he didn’t know how desperate Alastair might get if cornered. “Fine….” Bones said finally. “Just… please consider it. At the very least I’m following the lead on his father and I don’t want anything to happen to you. Be careful, okay?” Benjy rolled his eyes. It shouldn’t have surprised him that Edgar was being dramatic, but he was a little caught off guard that this was what he was being dramatic about. “Whatever,” he responded, “Just leave Alastair alone.” The last thing he needed was his friend nosing into their business. And if he did find out Edgar was harassing his boyfriend, then they were going to have a real problem. |
