There was a lot that Bones had to take in. He didn't know what a mental breakdown felt like, but he was pretty sure he experienced one talking to Dudley--Harry. It was Harry. James and Lily's kid who was a literal infant, not much older than his own newborn daughter. He knew he'd left quickly and alarmed his wife, but it was better than her watching him feel like he was devolving into madness, unable to explain why. So he got up and took a walk. Bones didn't go very far. There was a park around the corner from the hospital, so he walked there and took a seat on a bench, giving himself a moment to think. He had resigned himself to the possibility that he would die in this war, but hearing that his children were in danger changed a lot. His life wasn't the only one at risk. Cate didn't ask for this and neither did the kids, but Bones couldn't exactly abandon his job and the Order. It made it more complicated that Harry asked him not to tell anybody. He spent quite some time in the park, trying to gather his thoughts and fending off questions from Benjy and Cate. He wanted to tell them, but he knew what it felt like now to hear that he died. Not maybe. He did. With Harry there, that could change, obviously, but Bones needed to figure out where to start. He returned a few hours later, feeling like he'd just run a marathon when he was just sitting on a bench. The hospital was relatively quiet, as was the room with Cate and Charlotte in it. Bones sat down in the chair next to the bed and reached out to gently brush the hair off his wife's face. He had to save her. If he did nothing else, he had to do this one thing. |
