Mary should have been thankful for the uptick in visitors at the park. Usually, more people meant more donations, more pictures on social media and then nice numbers sent down from the state office. Even parks had quotas and they weren't of the tree or bird variety. It was about making a piece of protected land seem valuable or interesting, otherwise it was easy for it to turned privatized and then Condoland. Mary had seen it happen before. Paved paradise, put up a parking lot, etc. So, she should have been glad. But, a bunch of foolhardy treasure seekers made her nervous like she was suddenly put in charge of a Jedi daycare. So much could go so very wrong.
And, if someone died? It would just make the park more crowded. If there was a treasure out there, Mary wanted anyone to find it. Soon.
The ranger station was part office, part visitor center. The station part was off limits to the public (except for the occasional tour) and the visitor center was where most of the volunteers and rookie rangers spent there time. It wasn't bigger than a two bedroom apartment with displays, stuffed wildlife and a small souvenirs counter. Mary was in her ranger gear, big hat and everything, while she watched a little kid try to talk his mom into buying him a knife. Mary would have been that kid. Same gleam in her eye as she looked over the blades. The difference? Mary was a princess growing up. She could have a jewel encrusted sword if she wanted. The mom made no signs of relenting, so Mary slipped behind the counter and went to fix a display about cryptozoology that had been messed with a little.
"Not my idea." She said as she heard someone approach. "But, the old ranger said I had to keep it." Mary gave the jackalope a little pat between the antlers.
