Nick + Frank: the diner
Who: Nick and Frank
What: Diner food, coffee, refresh and reacquaintance
When: Recent
Warnings: Nada, unless language.
This flower business was sucking the hell out of the heart of his business and Nick wanted nothing so much as to lay the sonofabitch responsible out on his ass. Some days, the old itch climbed back onto his shoulders and sat there like it was in the driving seat and there wasn't a goddamn thing you could do about it but ride it out, patient. Nick, he wasn't patient. He tried but the car that had been jerry-rigged to take him out to the Capital for appointments, it hurt a little to drive and he hadn't found nobody to run the kind of errands needed if you had to get your ass to PT. The heat helped some but if he didn't get his ass out toward the Capital soon, atrophy was gonna start being a problem. They kept waving chance under his nose out there, speculative surgery that was goddamn expensive and fucking painful and would put him back on his back for the better part of a year but it was hope and Nick didn't like hope held out like a hooker in a doorframe, soliciting for business.
So he was ornery, but the whole damn town knew that about his diner. The late night crowd had been the late night crowd last night, Fridays close on payday were good business for anyone and men flush with money and full of drink made their way out to the trailers coming on to midnight and the lot of them washed up in his diner around two. He couldn't do up all the night before and fresh as fuck in the morning no more, he'd seen his own face in the mirror that morning and he showed the signs. But he was the wheels behind the counter because the flower business had shot down business to practically nothing and he wasn't gonna ask any of the kids in his team to work when the air was full of shit.
He sat behind the counter with a mug of his own coffee in his hand and watching the street instead of moving plates because the only people in a booth were a pair of kids splitting fries and eating so slowly the whole thing was probably cold.
