Crust & Crumb (ish) - Iris / Manning
Who: Iris and Manning
What: Pickup after police questioning
Where: The staircase to the apartments above C&C
When: Not long after this.
Warnings/Rating: Probably bad feels, guilt, maybe some crying
They'd questioned her. She'd had a plan going in, had practically convinced herself that what she was going to tell them was the truth. But the detective had touched on a thing that could get Iris to break - being the cause of more hurt to someone she cared deeply about. She'd thought that she was doing the best for Sam, especially since her sister didn't seem to remember aything about that night, but it all ended up going sideways once she was in the interview room, and the words had slipped from her unwillingly.
And once they had, she'd been dismissed, handed over to another officer, and escorted away. Everything still felt numb to her (at least the parts that didn't feel like pain or failure), and she didn't even argue when they'd pulled to a stop in front of the bakery. The temporary employee inside (looking more permanent every day) barely glanced up from his phone when the car pulled to a stop, and Iris (keys in her pocket because she'd locked Manning's house behind herself when she left) let herself into the stairway that led to her apartment.
But she found that she could only get about halfway up the stairs before she could't force herself to go any farther. She didn't want to be up there. It didn't feel safe to her, hadn't for too long, and over the past weeks she'd taken everything truly important over to Manning's house. Even Gertrude was there, having (somehow) settled in with Manning's dogs and come to their own arrangement of peace. There was nothing left for her in the apartment, but she didn't feel like she could go anywhere else. Trapped in between, she sat down on one of the stairs, tucked her heels up, and curled in on herself, lost.
