The theme was heroes, and there was a basket outside the front door, filled with an assortment of DIY masks to be used by anyone who forgot a costume: Superheroes, historical figures, literary heroines and cute animals masks, all covered in glitter and paint. The two-story house had balloons lining the driveway, and twinkle lights wreathed the door and announced that there was a party within. The music that played was from a borrowed playlist on repeat and shuffle, and the throwback songs spilled out onto the grass and and street, inviting people to come inside. Inside, the house was decorated with lights and more lights, with all other lighting doused for the evening in favor of a warm fairyland glow within the house's walls. Beside the door, a gift awaited partygoers as a thank you for attending. Every flat surface held some delicacy: Steak and potatoes and green beans sat alongside a huge bowl of macaroni and cheese and a caprese salad, and there were sweets in abundance, including red velvet brownies, and smores cups, and butterscotch cookies, and grasshopper brownie bars, and peanut butter chocolate bars. A milkshake bar in the kitchen had all the fixings for the evening's drinks. Every door to the home was unlocked for the evening, and even the house's three upstairs bedrooms were accessible to those who really, really required some privacy. (One. Two. Three.) Folding chairs dotted the living areas, lights strung along their backs and merrily twinkling, while the unlocked, heated basement was also strung with lights and offered additional, if quieter, seating. There was no scheduled end to the party, no cutoff for the guests, and anyone too filled with treats to leave was welcome to grab a soft place to sleep it off. |
