The weather hadn't gotten any warmer and Wren was still sleeping out in the woods, pushed in between the roots of his favourite tree as deep in the leaf litter as he could get. It meant that he was covered somewhat from the wind and the cold outside, but the cold of the ground seeped up into his bones and made him shiver anyway, even wrapped up in the blanket Jeremiah had gifted him with the first time he'd gone to the man's house.
Wren was a skin-and-bones thing but he'd become gaunt as the ground froze up and the grass grew icy and scarce and scraps or remains in town became a premium for the other homeless critters of Repose. His joints ached and his bones seemed to bruise his skin and the more cold and hungry he'd become the more he'd lain in one place until he'd developed a full-chest cough that rattled his small frame, a pounding in his sinus-blocked head and a temperature that was closer to climbing into a fever with each hour spent huddled in his blanket on the ground.
He'd groused on the forum because his chest was crackling like fire taking over wooden branches and wow was he cold, but when Jeremiah told him he was at home he couldn't connect the one with the other. He'd assumed his friend was lonely and the idea of it had him stumbling up on wobbly, frozen legs, his blanket wrapped around his head and shoulders as he stumbled on numb feet to the area of the lake where he'd been looking for worms, and further on still until he spied the light of Jeremiah's house through the trees and then came out onto the porch. He coughed, a deep, wracking, sore thing, and when he'd regained his breath he went up and tapped on one of the side windows.
