Who: Torrie and Solomon Reed
Where: the subway
What: Family reunions!
When: Backdated to midday August 15th, after this and prompted by this.
The little green star is safely tucked into Sol's pack, and also into the back corner of his mind while he moves through the subway tunnels. He may be a free spirit, but he isn't naive and the lenses in his glasses are anything but rose-tinted. He sees what is, prides himself on that, and so he knows as he moves through the dark that a full pack is a tempting thing, that a healthy-looking person is an intriguing target to those who live down here where the sun doesn't shine and the supply trucks don't serve. He knows, too, that there are those who know what his position is above ground, and who might want to make some twisted use of that.
He knows what happened to Gray Wolfe, and he knows that it could so easily have been him.
But Solomon has never, ever let fear, rational or otherwise, stop his feet from moving forward, and he isn't about to start now.
The light that he carries is very small and very dim, just enough that he can see each step he's taking. He knows the way to Torrie's train car, and he doesn't need much in the way of light, certainly would rather not draw attention to himself. He'd rather his eyes adjust to the dark.
But added to the practical there is also that old feeling of exploring, of checking in to a new life and looking around. Solomon has always wanted immersion, authenticity. A look at how it really is, not the glossy Mickey Mouse version. The people who live down here don't carry blazing torches, so neither does he. Though there is a dime beneath his tongue. Maybe Gretchen planted the idea in his head and that's why he feels like his soul is more loosely tethered to his body down here, but whatever the reason, he feels it.
He moves with purpose, without hesitation about which turn to take, and he arrives at Torrie's place unscathed, unharrassed, and wondering what he is about to walk into. Torrie's life has never been a predictable one, and has never been a typical one, either. So many people in a situation like hers, with demons like hers, just look a mess, act a mess, and so clearly need help. The thing with Solomon's sister is that she's always seemed competent. She tells you she's fine, she's got it under control, and you believe her. Or maybe he just always wants to believe her, but Solomon would rather not think that's the case.
He moves along the station platform, his shadow a jumping thin trace of a line. "Tor?" he calls, muted though it travels through the tunnels well enough, bouncing and jagged as the shadow on the wall.
