WHO: TR, Rodeo, and Adelaide
WHERE: Capitol/Dog Park
WHAT: A groundbreaking communication
WHEN: The day before a very important meeting.
Ever since Thomas walked into her bath and they came to certain understandings, Adelaide's life has felt surreal. After so much time spent glossing over and hiding, subverting and circumnavigating, this new transparency feels a bit like being naked - funny, since she literally was naked when this openness began and, she has begun to suspect since, naked was precisely the way her husband had planned for her to feel at the time.
She had instead shrouded herself in honesty, if that was a thing, and it had worked, but carrying on that way is proving tricky. The truth of her circumstances is easy enough to give - the truth of her heart is assuredly not something that Thomas would take well to hearing.
And so she continues to walk the line.
They sit together on the sofa, Charlie in her lap and her phone in hand though she hasn't called just yet. She's briefed her brother, warning Rodeo that Thomas is, point-for-point, very likely the human most efficiently designed to rile up his ego, but that she knows Rodeo can keep his head if it means getting them together more easily. She does believe this, but she also knows that this interaction is as unstable as liquid nitroglycerin, and they truly don't need any explosions. She didn't say that to Rodeo, though. Shows of faith in him have always been more effective than warnings to behave.
With Thomas, though, she takes a different tactic. She curls her feet beneath her on the sofa, brushes her lips over Charlie's downy head, and lifts her brows before she hits the "call" button. "Now I want you to get all your answers, but you will go easy on him, won't you darling?" she asks. "He understands the situation, but he's always been the one caring for me before now, and he isn't used to answering to anybody about it. He cares a great deal."
